Please Help -new career working on ships

Like i say. I know i got to get my foot in the door. Hoping MSC will work out. I will wait patiently for them to start reviewing the apps. If i get to tired of waiting i will take what i can get. There are plenty of places i could look to apply around savannah brunswick ga area. Thanks for the words of hope. As they say. I wont quit my day job in the meantime. Just looking for the right job to leave the One im in.

Kirby has a bunch of in house training for you to move up, sounds like the 17/h was the training rate until you go through their deckhand class which would be beneficial for you. If you can deck on tugs you’ll have no issue deep sea.

Last I remember, Kirby for the part i worked for was 300ish didn’t work the river so I may be wrong, but the offshore boats recently got good raises.

It is far easier to find work as a deckhand than finding work with no experience. I’d jump on the offer, ask questions like what does the promotion path look like, etc.
while working as a deckhand you’ll learn about other companies through your crew mates. You’ll also see other companies equipment, see who’s busy and who isn’t.

I’ve been searching the forum and came across this, very helpful. Making similar moves to the OP’s this year. Thanks!

Good luck on your career development.

So here I am 10 months later. Got a conditional offer of employment with msc. Did the background, drug screen, and medical. Was said to be fit for hire. Then they say there’s a pause on new employee orientations. That they dont know when they will start back up. So for a year basically I have been strung along and then told your hired but you cant work for us yet. What would you do? Wait? Or go pay 1000 for some stcw training and try to get on a tugboat or something close to Georgia?

Do not wait. Pay $1000 and go to work. Life is short and waiting on employers dragging their feet is a fools errand.

This is a perfect example of why MSC cannot hire enough mariners, and why working for MSC sucks.

yea, I’d go with msc, they’ll pay for everything and you’ll get a real education, and lots of sea time. or NOAA, or corp of engineers though that’s not blue water. hope you can read this for a add covers the bottom of this response page.
