I remember reading about this a month back. I believe this was actually at the behest of the British Navy. His multimega bazillion dollar yacht just happened to have an ROV capable for the job. He had his boat in London for the Olympics and they asked him for a favor. The thing that puzzles me is how come the Brit navy had to ask a private US citizen to borrow his ROV. Don’t they have their own equipment?

Saw that mega-yacht once in the Sulawesi Sea on the way to Australia while I was on a Matson ammo ship. Allen has a private “seal team” for security on his 400+ footer. Another time I was docked in the Sembawan shipyard in front of sultan of OMAN’s yacht which was as impressive as Allens. It had a helicopter,Mercedes sedan,and a 40ft motor launch on board.

  The days of the British empire are over. Now they are down to a single time zone, not counting some islands they purloined from some unarmed natives. They think they are still a world power, just ask them.

The Royal Navy has submarines, probably nuclear ones at that, so they have to have a couple ROV, sitting around just for rescue purposes. I am sure they have more as well. They are in the North sea, there is a whole fleet of ROV boats up there, but they are like the one I am on and go for a 100 grand a day plus, so why spend your own money for something like this, when you can get some smuck multimega bazillion dollar ex-computer geek to do it for free just because he thinks it is COOL!!!
