OSV utilization in GOM

I recently started in GOM as AB while holding a 1600T and decent mate seatime in order to get my foot in the door with Oil Field work. Trying to get Offshore experience ASAP as AB so I can move into the wheelhouse, yet it seems all we do is sit at the dock without work and no end in sight. I thought larger OSV utilization is supposed to be quite high, why are so many boats sitting idle in Fourchon?

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, a lot of guys would love to be sitting on the dock earning money.

This is a very legitimate question. It makes one wonder whether some of the planned new builds may have to be cancelled. Is the offshore oil boom real? Did the boat companies get too far out ahead of the curve?

Calm down everybody things are always a little slower during hurricane season. This week is the mid point of the season things will pick up again real soon.

My guess is that soon a lot of the “old” boats will be forced into retirement.

Probably firstly due to customer demands for reliability. I recently was on one of our companies older boats and several times over a few month period had to tell the costumer we needed a few hours to change a starter or something before working. I know this happens on newer boats as well, but some of the old boats just seem to be one break down and delay after another.

Also I’ve been reading a lot about “green passport” and other environmental labels. Does any one else think there may come a day soon when companies in one way or another will be penalized for operating older equipment?

You have to remember, the big boom hasn’t even started in my opinion. Anadarko alone is going to get 4 new rigs starting in November or December. We’re getting a drill ship mobed up right now, so that’s 5 new rigs for them alone. Va is pushing to drill and how many new drill ships/rigs are being built now? I know they won’t all come to the GoM, but we already know some of the new builds will be leaving too. I don’t know which boat you’re on, but some boats are flat out out-dated and have no use. I believe HOS figured this out with some of their boats which is why they are adding 40’ to 6 of the 200s and making them SOLAS and DP2.

You absolutely, positively have to LOVE that Putin and the Europeans are getting into a shouting match over Russian natural gas pricing in the past few weeks.

This only leads to pressure for new gas supplies for Europe, namely LNG !!!

Fantastic - let them have at it !!! Thimk about it.
