Just curious what systems do some of you fine folks use for onboard wireless Internet? And if you knew what it cost per month?
We share a 3g card hooked up to a router inside the boat. I worked with a dredge that had 4mbit sat internet and I think it was something like 1000 a month
Did you share the cost, or did the company pay for that? What was the latency on the signal, was it really bad? Could you do anything real time with it? (i.e. skype) I’m also curious what deep sea boats do in general, do they all have satellite internet?
We split the 3g and the other company paid the sat internet. At any given point 5 people would be using it so it wasn’t the fastest but it was better than nothing.
Tugs or ships?
I work on tugs and I have a old verizon account, unlimited wireless, $39.99 month. Its fairly realtime. I skype with my family a couple times a week. I think the new plans average $50-$60 a month and 5-8 GB, its pretty hard to burn up 8 GB. Wireless hotspots, convienent, but you always have 'that guy" trying to steal your wireless.lol.
Some of the new “broad band” plans have a GB limit on them. one of the guys on the boat was netflixing and went over…way over… it was way expensive.
It’s for tugs, good info thanks for the replys.

I was wondering about internet on the deep sea which would have to be satellite. There’s no other way. I have a little modem that receives a Virgin wireless internet signal. Unlimited internet costs $50 a month, but there’s no contract, and you only pay for the months you need it. I got that at the Radio Shack, and it was the best deal out there for a wireless modem. Verizon requires a contract or something, and it was prohibitively expensive in comparison. It works much better than tethering my laptop to my AT&T account through my phone.
I know some guys who work for ATC and apparently they had sat internet. I heard the company cancelled it for cost reasons because they were using too much bandwidth with Skype. Yeah right I am sure those guys were looking at Skype. The AMHS used to have internet. We used it on the ER computer. I bet most deep sea ships that carry passengers have it on board.
Using Sprint with a corporate unlimited account at $62.00 a month. It’s my own card, we have one on the tug that is company paid and networked with the office. Mine works well with Skype when I have a decent signal.
