GustoMSC Unveils New Ultra-Deepwater Drillship Design
By Rob Almeida On June 16, 2014
Magellan drillshipOffshore design firm GustoMSC unveiled their newest drillship design today, one named after Ferdinand Magellan, the leader of the first expedition to circumnavigate the planet.
GustoMSC notes this new vessel will be focused on supporting ultra-deepwater operations in water depths of 12,000 feet or more and feature 20k psi well control systems.
“The design is the result of a specific focus on operators’ requirements. We also received feedback on our existing products and, of course, learn from the industry in general. After the Macondo incident in 2010, for example, there were many recommendations concerning operational procedures and rig design – with an emphasis on safety. We naturally wanted to incorporate that information into the new design,” commented Sjoerd Hendriks, Design Manager of the Magellan project.
The Magellan is the largest drillship that GustoMSC has designed to date.
regardless of whether there are too many new drillships or not, this is still a very impressive vessel. I wonder who will be the first to order one?
