Noaa corp

Continuing the discussion from Is NOAA on the chopping block?:

You are so correct, the NOAA Corps has been one of the biggest Gov. boondoggle I have ever seen. It is so unnecessary and could be done with so much more efficiency with a Merchant Mariner Deck Officer crew. I am a longtime MM and worked at OMAO for around five years before I had to leave due to watching all the incompetence in the NOAA Corps. It was so painful to watch so many bad decisions. I also so many people suffer the same fate with leaving because they just couldn’t take it. Of course, the worst employees were the ones that stayed.

The whole OMAO sector of NOAA needs to be transferred to the USCG. This was attempted 15+ years ago but the USCG was not interested in inheriting such a mess. Every NC Officer would have had to take a two level demotion just to be brought into the CG due to qualification level.

If DOGE is a truly serious group, this is one of the first things that should have been done!

That’s a fun opinion

Feeling like the NWC is an important branch of the government, should the NWC become a separate entity? Just wondering.

Totally agree with you. NWS is an invaluable part of services GOV offers. NOAA hides behind it though, they always use this part of the Agency to hide all the other waste. Parts of NMFS are also invaluable to protect our Ocean resources but there is a lot of waste behind it also. NOAA needs some good professional leadership to run the Agency, not just pretend sailors that are just trying to make retirement. The devil is in the details that completely muddy the water for anyone who hasn’t worked there.

Well if we have some fishermen on here I’d love to hear their take on this.
