A gCaptain reader sent me a review of the Newport News Maritime Museum and wanted me to write an article about it. I’m a BIG fan of the museum but I’ve only been to it once and that was 10-15 years ago so I can’t write up a full review myself.
Instead, I thought I’d post his emailed review and open up the chat to all you.

The Maritime Museum in Newport News Virginia, officially known as The Mariners’ Museum and Park, is one of the best maritime museums in the United States, if not the world. It’s located in Newport News, Virginia which is kinda near the big navy base in Norfolk. Established in 1930, it boasts a world-renowned collection of over 32,000 artifacts that explore the history and impact of the world’s waterways on commerce, culture, and society. Visitors can explore a wide range of exhibits, from ship models and navigational tools to captivating displays on naval warfare and the evolution of maritime trade. The museum’s extensive collection includes the iconic USS Monitor Center, which features artifacts from the famous Civil War ironclad warship.
A key highlight of The Mariners’ Museum is the USS Monitor Center, which houses the world’s largest collection of artifacts from the famous ironclad warship, USS Monitor, and tells the dramatic story of its construction, battle, and recovery. The interactive exhibits provide a deep dive into the ship’s role during the Civil War and its impact on naval warfare. The museum also features a full-scale replica of the Monitor’s turret, allowing visitors to get a closer look at this engineering marvel.
Surrounding the museum is a beautiful 550-acre park with the scenic 167-acre Lake Maury, offering visitors a perfect blend of natural beauty and maritime history. The Noland Trail, a five-mile path around the lake, provides a picturesque setting for hiking and enjoying the outdoors.
