New Title 46 law and denial

If you get a DUI you can have your license revoked, so they’re not stopping at sex offenders. And it’s not a slippery slope. Why should you be entrusted to operate a ship with millions worth of cargo and equipment if you repeatedly can’t operate a car?

Dude idk where you take your piss tests but that is not remotely close to any experience I or anyone I know has ever had. Your test literally says “DOT/USCG” on it and the people doing the test know what that means so I highly doubt they’re treating like a “druggie”.

Well, I’m not getting my tests at a union clinic.

Many of the people in some of these clinics are there for court ordered testing.

If the government were serious about public safety and doing something about the drug problem, there would be drug testing for ordinary driver’s licenses.

But that will never happen because too many people use drugs, and no politician that voted for that would ever be reelected.

Neither am I?

And I’d wager that just as many are there for pre-employment drug testing. The maritime industry isn’t the only profession that does it.

Go somewhere else. That has never been my experience. I go to a testing place 10mins from my house and they are cordial as can be. Made an appointment, drank a bunch of water, in & out in about 6mins. Had worse experiences talking to crew on the rig with dip spit on their chin and that nasty ass Skoal wintergreen breath, EVERY DAY.

I go where employers send me.

So Quest or Labcorp? CVS? Walgreens? Are they sending you to take piss tests at the local penitentiary or the probation office?

Find better employers if you’re unhappy with where you take your piss tests. You’re the first one on this forum to say “we should be telling these companies to pound sand when they want us to do x y z! There’s a Mariner shortage we have the leverage!”

I don’t worry about taking the drug tests. I do it when I have to. I just don’t like it.

Getting back on topic, hopefully this flow chart is plastered about your vessel by now, and I’d like to direct your attention to it. It’s MISB 1-23.

Please point to me on the chart were USCG is revoking or suspending licenses without due process? It required Federal law Enforcement investigation, DOJ looking at it, and and Administrative Law Judge looking at it before you get to a decision (which does not always mean revocation or suspension). If it turns out to be nothing, Hopefully It’s getting documented that there was a complaint, should the behavior repeat itself.

Frankly I think we should be more concerned about non-criminal folks feeling safe in a workplace environmental instead of trying to protect someone because “they’ve been sailing for so long,” and “that’s just how they are” or “The wives at home don’t feel comfortable with them on the boat.” I’d Chalk the icky parts of this thread up to the culture which we are trying to change onboard, but god damn this thread got sad fast. So much reportable SASH goes unreported because “it wasn’t that bad” or fear of being accused of looking for a payout.

Frankly, I think everyone should have, and be up to date on how to use the CGIS Tips app, Reports should be done in tandem to the company chain of command, and CGIS. If you get held down and assaulted by a co-worker in the Walmart break room, you don’t wait for your manager or Walmart HQ to handle the situation, you should call the cops, a crime has been committed.

Jesus Christ, people’s kids are stuck on the ships with them too.

There are so many posters onboard now that it’s all mostly ignored, and the useful posters get lost in the mess. The last thing we need are more mandates to turn the whole vessel into a poster graffiti exhibit.

What we need are one or two well publicized prosecutions and MMC revocations each year. That will encourage impulse control and better behavior onboard.

We also need to understand that women may become less welcome onboard (due to the risk of SASH allegations) for awhile.

In society at large, with thousands of years of customs and criminality, change will progress at an evolutionary pace. At times it may be one step forward and two steps back. There is no anti-SASH magic wand that will instantly bring enlightenment to the millions of harassers and sex offenders in our midst.

From Fox News

A proposed Louisiana Senate bill allowing judges to sentence convicted child rapists to surgical castration may become law.

Reversible chemical castration through medication is already approved as a criminal punishment in the state, but earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed Democratic Sen. Regina Barrow’s bill by a vote of 74 to 24, which would take the punishment a step further.

The law would allow judges to order the procedure for men or women who have committed an aggravated sexual offense against a child under 13, assuming that they are a viable candidate. The procedure would take place no less than one week after a convicted person finishes their prison sentence. If they don’t show up or refuse, per the proposed bill, they could be sentenced to an additional three to five years behind bars.

Gentlemen…take it easy! Should you fall within this new code and denied an mmc and or/license, there’s alternative employment working for the US Govt. Groping and sniffing random kids is welcomed and encouraged there! How many clips of Biden performing this vary act are there? Should you get into a heated argument with your underwear clad “friend”? Have no fear, we are here to provide you with an alibi and sentencing them to 30 years in prison.

What friggin vessels are hiring kids! That seems sketchy if you’re working for a company that is hiring kids.

Maybe a water taxi, sea tow, or a tour boat? I pray that you aren’t working for a deepsea company

Everyone is someone’s kid.

Plus, SIU apprentices are as young as 18. Which may not be a kid by legal standards, but shit, captains called me “kid” until I was 28.

I can’t help but appreciate your deflection, in that this is what you found issue with, not me pointing out that you’re fear mongering to to gain sympathy for people who have been horny for so long it’s hard for them to keep composure, and and afraid of facing consequences for their actions.

Putting that aside, there are a lot of cadets who aren’t even old enough to drink, employed on sizes of American Flagged vessels. If you stumble into a parent’s Facebook group, it’s apparent these are still kids. Not to bring into the conversation the fine line between child abuse material and the “barely legal” or College Freshman" categories on some websites, but a brain isn’t done cooking till 25. At the end of the day, the 75 year old steward deserves the same decency as the 18 year old- to not be harassed at work.

Unfortunately for you, it’s your job to understand the regulations in place, I know change is scary, and some may feel they already learned everything they needed to know when they got an Unlimited Master’s ticket in 2004, but having an ounce of awareness is priced in to your day rate. This is a MSIB bulletin, you should be reading these if you are sailing in a licensed capacity.

I’m afraid if you’re feeling this way, you are projecting the fact that on the inside you may be the one less welcome onboard. I personally have no concerns sailing with women onboard, because I don’t sexually harass people.

I was 18 on my first cadet ship.

Well a human brain starts decreasing in capacity at 40…… let’s not go down this rabbit hole.
You sound so contradictory. Listen everyone onboard is a legal adult. Treat everyone the same- with respect and decency. It’s that simple! Have we lost common sense!?!

Doesn’t make you a “kid.” And if you were offended by it, I hope you spoke up right at the time or pulled the Captain off to the side at an appropriate time. I’d say 99.9% of the time having a serious one on one convo with someone will end any issues. Im not saying you are but I find the people that can’t speak up and articulate their issues that have the most problems in this industry

You’re missing the point and deflecting because you know what you said was stupid initially.

Having sex offenders on ships isn’t a plus for society. It just means someone else has to deal with it. What if they start using the starlink to download some fucked up stuff? Then the whole crew loses access. Not every sex offender is a child molester, they can be rapists.
