Yes, that’s right. The 90 day round-the-world trip was good experience but the training is the weak point. In clear weather most situations require a mix, typically maybe 80% visual and 20% radar/ECDIS.

Trying to manage the switch (from full dependence on screens) is like taking off the training wheels. Be helpful if new mates had a little more simulator time. For a few it doesn’t take much for them to “get it” Confidence that it’s doable is the key.

This is what I spend the most time working on with new Third Officers. They know the material, they just don’t have the time in the seat to have practiced it. Building that confidence takes time and enough slack on the safety line to figure out where the dangers lie. This in turn has made me a better Captain as I observe and give subtle suggestions or let it run on a bit longer so they see for themselves what I am seeing already in progress.
