– We will continue the search as long as there is hope of life, and for a good while longer, said department director Kjetil Lussand in HRS.
They led and coordinated the search after a person fell overboard from a tanker southwest of Stavanger on Sunday afternoon.

At 7:40 p.m. they wrote in a press release that they were ending the search operation.
“After an overall assessment in consultation with a doctor, the Chief of Police in the South-West Police District, Hans Vik, has decided to end the search, as it is no longer considered possible to find the person alive,” the press release states.
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m., and the ship sent out a mayday message at 4:02 p.m.
The tanker was located about 45 kilometers southwest of Stavanger, in an area that has been hit hard by storm “Dave.” Strong gales were blowing from the northwest, with recorded wind gusts of up to 30 meters per second.
“This is in the middle of extreme weather. There are demanding conditions with strong winds and high waves,” said Lussand.

More vessels are searching

At 16:50, a SAR Queen rescue helicopter arrived on the scene and began a search. Flightradar data shows that the helicopter departed from Sola.
The search for the person lasted for just over three hours.
In addition to the helicopter, the Coast Guard and other vessels in the area were notified and assisted in the operation.
The tanker in question is registered in the Bahamas. The ship was en route from the oil refinery at Mongstad to Lithuania when the incident occurred.
HRS says a private helicopter from Equinor also assisted in the search. There was also a Dutch navy helicopter that was on standby to assist in the search.
“Our thoughts go out to the relatives and the rest of the crew on board the tanker in this demanding situation,” HRS writes in the press release.
HRS Southern Norway thanks everyone involved for their solid efforts and good cooperation throughout the search.
