Mate I sailed with died years ago (in the '80’s) from AIDS contracted via youthful IV drug use.
He was well over the heroin by the time he was aboard, and he was a fine man and a true shipmate.
He called to say he was on the way out and why…
Youthful indiscretions, wrong time, wrong place, whatever.
But he isn’t here today when he should be by all rights

this update from Mike Schuler doesn’t say but does confirm drugs and not poisonous flatus was involved
Drugs Found On Maersk Alabama Where Security Contractors Died
By Mike Schuler On February 20, 2014
An investigation into the deaths of two American security contractors by the Seychelles Police Force has confirmed the presence of drugs and drug paraphernalia in the cabin of the Maersk Alabama where the bodies of the two men were found Tuesday.
A statement from Maersk Line, Limited late Thursday confirmed what some had suspected about the mysterious deaths onboard the U.S.-flagged vessel made famous in 2009 when it was hijacked by Somali pirates and later depicted in the film ‘Captain Phillips’. A gCaptain source has indicated that the drug found is heroin.
The MLL statement said that it is working with security contractor Trident Group to ensure that security personnel on MLL vessels adhere to Maersk’s zero tolerance policy on the use of drugs and alcohol.
MLL regularly contracts vessel security services to Virginia-based Trident Group in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard security directives. The company has stated that based on their experience with the contractor that they believe that this was an isolated incident.
Still, MLL says it has initiated an action plan that will include a review of all security personnel records to confirm that drug tests, background checks, and training requirements are current; retesting of security personnel for drug use where necessary; an audit of personnel hiring, training, performance evaluation, and compliance practices; and a reevaluation of the shore leave policy.
The Trident Group will also immediately implement a random drug testing program to increase the frequency at which it screens security personnel, the MLL statement said.
An emailed statement issued Wednesday from Trident Group President, Tom Rothrauff, noted that “There is no history of any abuse of any type of substance associated with either of the men.”
The bodies of the two men were found in a cabin on Tuesday at about 4:30 p.m. while the ship was docked at Port Victoria, Seychelles.
The men have been identified as Mark Kennedy and Jeffrey Reynolds, 43 and 44, respectively. According to an Associated Press report, Kennedy is an ex-Navy SEAL from Baton Rouge, Louisiana who enlisted in 1995 and completed his final tour of duty in 2008.
My first thought was Godspeed. But my second thought was one that no one else mentioned. Instead of heroin, could it have possibly been steroids? I’m no expert but I think they can be injected as well.
Never met any SEALS but I do know 2 Army special forces (Green Beret) guys. These guys are super smart, loyal and mission motivated. They are the very best kind of friend and the absolute worst kind of enemy.
I imagine SEALS are made of the same ‘right’ stuff.
I find it hard to comprehend that someone of that high a caliber can go down the path of hard drugs. If it could happen to them, it could happen to anyone.
Read “Fearless”. It’s the biography of Adam Brown. Young man went from full on crackhead to team six operator. Amazing the strength of drug addiction, he even dealt with it as a seal.
I’ll admit I cried three of four times during that read. Adam Brown is the American success story. And one of the reasons I have a monthly donation to the red circle foundation.
I wonder if these guys have read Adam Browns book…maybe they have the same story…

Not many spec op guys, if any, wouldn’t know Adams story.
Just seems a little strange for both men to overdose at the same time. Unless it was on purpose I guess. Overdoses by regular users are normally just going overboard a small amount. For two users to do that at the same time seems, well strange.
Heroin overdoses have been big lately, some “hot” batches going around from news/obituaries.
we’ll I’m no heroin expert but I would guess they picked up a bad batch. Who the hell knows what goes into that shit
Those guys didn’t pick an easy road, did their time, served their country. Tough news for the families.
