retired rat and privateer- Tico and Scott went across the “line” Gulf of Sidra, Libya 1988 Caron had Desron 20 onboard. Supposed to have been the Yorktown, but she banged up when we played ‘swap the paint’ with the commies in the Black Sea
James.Hatch- hated being near the Blue Ridge, bells, bells and more bells!!
kf5er- you have my deepest respect! Talk about ‘old school’ Tin-can Navy.
jakeman- were you on the Carolina when the POW killed himself? Had a Ltjg standing OOD who was ‘book smart’, and an OS1 getting his quals first night inport after that. Man, did we mess with that poor kid! Needless to say, my .45 was nice and clean by turnover. By your commands, you were a nuke?

Good times, despite the Detroit. Would do it again.

I did 2 weeks on the Midway after being Medi-vac from the USS Kirk 1087 in 1988. Flew there on Helicopter while underway in the South China Sea. Pulled me off the deck on the Kirk by a rope and harness. Went there for x-rays on my finger that had gotten smashed by some boat falls. I spent 2 weeks in there transit division, Did nothing the whole time, just muster. Had another Bm3 O’Driscol fly over to the Midway with me. He really smashed his fingers good, so they really sent me over to keep him company and to just double check my fingers too. Miss Ya OD!

According to this I’m qualified for a Horned Shellback 1976; Mossback (Cape Horn) 1976, Order of The Ditch (W to E) 1976; Order of The Rock 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980; Safari to Suez 1979; Royal Order of The Whale Bangers (almost) 1977; Persian Excursion 1979; Royal Order of The Spanish Main 1979, 2005; Blue Nose 2006, 2007; Order of The Square Rigger 2008.

There are some funny certificates there seadog…But I’m a bit skeptical ,I see they even have certs for Wogs…How can that be?

The order of the Whale Bangers is surprising , does that happen a lot?

Can’t say how often, but on my first cruise we tracked (I was an ST) a contact that we were sure was a Rusky… until it surfaced and spouted. Never really got anywhere close to firing.

Later, during REFTRA down in GITMO, we were operating with a US sub and they had to raise their periscope so we could track it with radar and pretend it was a sonar contact. We still passed that evolution.

Saw alot of ships when stationed at Roosevelt Roads as they came in on liberty, but was shore duty at NASD Vieques. 3rd in my A-School class and turned down a tender in Pearl for shore duty in the Caribbean. 1st in class took a pre-comm in Bath (and a GMM rate since there was only one, the rest of us got GMG). 2nd took Gitmo. I took Vieques. The rest went to the fleet. Unfortunately got out with a medical before I could get my ship, but my orders were for the maiden cruise of the USS George Washington (CVN-73) to the Med.

Wow the USS O’Bannon. I heard a story about the first USS O’Bannon from WWII, I heard that they sank a Japanese submarine with potatoes. The story goes the O’Bannon was torpedoed by the sub and the sub surfaces to finish off the O’Bannon with their forward 3" gun mount. At the time the cook and the galley hands were on the back deck pealing potatoes for supper. When the Japanese came out on deck to man the gun the cook and galley hands started throwing the potatoes. When the officer of the deck seen this he ordered the gunman back inside and gave the order to dive thinking that the potatoes were hand granades but when they submerged they forgot to close the hatch. So the USS O’Bannon got credited with sinking a sub with potatoes. I wonder if you heard this story?
