Is there a lull in the Industry right now?

No tattoos or tobacco too? I don’t use tobacco or have tattoos but that seems strange. Sounds like a cult but if they pay and treat you well who cares?

Correct, no tobacco and no visible tattoos. People still smoke but they have to hide it from the office people.

Do they have coffee pots on their boats? Sounds like some type of C of LDS company?

Yes.

No, he just wants his people looking clean and professional (and really dislikes beards).

I’m all for clean & professional. I’m even fine with uniforms. I don’t have any tats but how does a mistake a person made in their early 20’s at a tattoo parlor affect how professional they are now? And the deal with facial hair? Some people look more professional & less baby faced or less hideous by covering their ugly mugs with hair. The owner of Signet has too many personality redflags for me.

If it’s coverable it’s not a big deal.

I think that’s just his personal thing against beards.

His personality sounds like he might be ok with certain mustache’s though…

Mustaches are allowed, just not beards.

It might be that No Tobacco is an emerging employment trend. Saves on healthcare costs. Lots of time and money wasted to accommodate smokers. Nicotine is a highly addictive gateway drug. Conflicts with non smokers rights. Etc etc. Refusing to hire smokers might be a good idea, but it certainly limits an employers other options in the tugboat trade.

Visible Tattoos have never been favored by employers. There is growing tolerance of tattoos in order to fill open positions, but I think many employers would rather not hire people with visible tattoos. Visible creepy looking tattoos or crude “prison tattoos,” can be a bad indicator.

I think beards are generally disfavored by society and employers, but this goes through phases. I could understand an employer banning beards for certain types of salesmen. Unless being prepared to wear gas masks is truly a legitimate concern, a beard ban is a bit much for the tugboat trade.

Hipsters have made beards popular…which is also tied into the fact that a 12pack of PBR costs the same as coors light.

Lots of companies moving oil or not require fit tests these days.

Only in the GOM would they get away with that shit. When we cracked 1mil bucks with DEP we went to the “next level”, had to have a meeting in NYC not far from wallstreet. I cant even ask if my employees are legal citizens nevermind fire someone for a beard. Stupidest shit I’ve ever heard. I hope they starve for qualified guys.

They help a little, but the career office at my Academy was always really poorly run and most of what they offered was local like tug and towing companies and I moved out of state after graduation. They also didn’t really do anything about helping graduates get into the unions as far as I know.

Getting back to the topic: Although we are seeing the typical winter slow down, the tugboat job market has recovered. Jobs are available. Now we just need wages to make a quantum leap upward.

Because there’s nothing to help with, you just sign up.

Since when? Every employer I’ve ever worked for has verified my citizenship / right to work on the US.

That is true but as an employer you are required to ask if they are legally allowed to work in the USA and you must ask for proof of that. You don’t have to be a a citizen of the country you work in but you must be legally allowed to work. Many ways of obtaining authorization to work. Residence visa, and many other visas allow non citizens to work. Citizenship and legal ability to hold a job are two entirely different matters.

It’s just you read about how some of this GOM shit works then I see the extra hoops NYC has, shake your head.

The GOM does not consider themselves part of the USA
