Good for anything up to that tonnage, also comes with 3000 ITC. I’ve only seen a few towing vessels that size and they’re very few.
ATB’s, Small OSV’s, I would imagine Ferrys or small Research Vessels…pretty much anything that’s not a ship or large OSV?
Truly hope it’s actually entry level positions you are interviewing people for. Entry level is high school diploma/GED with little to no work experience. Entry level doesn’t mean this is your first position with the company but you have a degree and maybe some work experience.
If people are demanding 100k, that kind of tells me you aren’t interviewing for entry level … oh well but what do I know.
Are you saying this as in, I’m not aware that several 9-5’s are paying that much, or that those you’re talking about are out of their mind for demanding that much?
I don’t personally know anybody with that kind of salary working a “normal job”.
The USCG is allowing them to sail short and/or use foreigners.
I haven’t seen that at AMO. Usually the only Chief Mate jobs that come on the board are for ROS.
You can never sail and still not need to put your license in continuity.
Game wardens have patrol boats. They’re the “water cops” in most states with water.
Yea but that can’t possibly keep an unlimited license active, can it?
Why not? Sea time is sea time. Hell, you can stop sailing completely and keep an unlimited license active with a simple at home, open book test.
You might need to do a different STCW class than the normal revalidation class since you aren’t doing real drills and such.
Huh. For some reason I always thought you needed some tonnage to keep it moving. Somehow I didn’t think a 24’ center console would do it. ![]()
I’m pretty sure you don’t buy even if you do then just take the open book, at home test and no sea time required.
Entry level, as in straight out of college, in technology and digital maritime applications.
100k is not unheard of for OTE. Plus depending on your location, salaries are tiered more now around that, if you are remote
If a 24’ center console qualifies as sea time for an unlimited than I already have my masters ![]()
Shoreside jobs have gotten a lot better it seems since I graduated school in 08. Most everyone I know with a decent job that they’re good at has a lot of flexibility ie hybrid, vacation, etc and pay is pretty good. I think the idea of 9-5 corporate drudgery being just the start of expectations is a bit more muddied than it used to be. There will always be people willing to try life at sea for a variety of reasons, but it’s a difficult lifestyle and when the quality of life is just better with a shoreside role, it makes the choice a lot easier.
Impossible to know what to believe then. Maybe there’s no shortage of any officers haha and people just make stuff up.
What is the Chief Mate climate like at MMP?
The only shortage Chief Mate jobs in MMP is on the Patriot Government vessels that are going away (despite protests from the maritime sector the Army going ahead with it) or SLNC and the MMP tanker contracts (worst paying companies and tanker contracts in the industry).
So I would say there really isn’t a shortage in MMP. It’s an artificial shortage.
If you don’t have a perm spot in the MMP now as a chief mate I predict it’s going to be another 8 years until the next big round of retirements. However this 8 year number might lengthen depending on how many mates and masters stick around in MMP after the loss of Patriot and the transfer of all the Express ships to MEBA halls next year.
The OP really just has to look at the industry and figure out what’s going to work for him by presenting the best opportunities when he graduates. Just keep track of what is going on while you are in school.
Limited tonnage qualifies you to keep your current license, not to upgrade though.
Excuse me if I’m understanding this wrong… You’re saying once I have my license, running my bass boat or center console up and down the lake/bay will qualify as “sea time” to keep my license going?
I don’t have any kind of USCG license of any kind right now if that’s what you’re thinking. I just have an amplitude of experience running boats as an avid fisherman/outdoorsman
Good reply. So regardless, it is worth the time and money for me to go get my degree and 3M license. There’s not exactly a shortage, but there are mate jobs available.
What its like now, is no indication of what it will be like when you graduate. No one on here can predict the future, cause if they could, definitely wouldn’t of been a mariner.
