Is Shell Ready for Arctic Exploration?

You know if this season had been a spectacular success up north, I’d be sitting here thinking what I missed being a part of and how no longer being at Noble has limited my chances to get up to the Arctic but exactly the opposite is true now. With the entire year being an unparalleled commercial disaster for Shell and all the supporting characters, there just might be a new dawn breaking in the years ahead with a whole new bunch leading the way. I’ve worked in both the GoM, the GoA and the rest of Alaska and know personally that you can’t work in the north like you do in the Gulf. Maybe now, Shell will turn the whole show around and take a different approach with new people and then go back with a true ability to make shit happen up there.

As bad as this incident is, it might be really what had to happen right now for this to actually work!

If I believed you meant it I’d have to “thank” that last post. You’ve simply stated the opposite too many times for it to be true.

For someone who has so much to offer, you sure don’t leave yourself a lot of high ground to stand on when your sermons begin.

The ball is in their court.

Doubtful any of us have ~
BTW, whatever it means, I appreciate all of your posts, rigdvr.

Why does my <Thanks> button go AWOL when I want to thank a member?
Oh. Mikey ~

So can we stay on topic or is the personal vendetta número uno?
So can we stay on topic or is the personal vendetta número uno?
ah but Rigdvr and I really love eachother…we just have these little tet a’ tet’s for the tourists!

To tell a steamy secret, he and I were in the same ballroom dance classes at KP years ago and let me tell you no man can waltz in heels like Rig can…a true natural if there ever was one. All I could manage was a Cha Cha before capsizing on the floor…it was something horrible to witness! Those instructors there killed my chances for being on “Dancing with the Stars” they did and today I have yet to forgive them…lousy effing bastards all of 'em!

Never did understand tho why Rig chose to not go professional? He coulda done it easy and he looks fabulous on chiffon too!

.

That’s good, I will get back to my Cuban cigar and pick through the popcorn

A blog post about the GOA weather forecasts from Prof. Cliff Mass

The storms win.

The bottom line is that based on climatology and the forecasts available throughout the period, this was no time to be doing a very difficult tow over the northern Gulf of Alaska. We should expect more from a major international company that is being trusted to drill for oil in ecologically sensitive regions.

Analysis of actual vs. predicted conditions in the middle. Strangely enough he is also of the opinion that one shouldn’t be surprised that there are big storms out there this time of year.

Cliff is a great guy with considerable expertise in computerized forecasting, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, and a passion for explaining his field to the public. He and his grad students created the first forecasting programs that contained enough detail (like the existence of the of the Olympic Mountains) to accurately model major characteristics of Washington’s climate. If you live or work in the area his book and blog would be worthwhile reading.

say hey to Raul and Fidel for me the next time you visit but make sure you declare your Cuban purchases when you clear Customs. I wonder why the USCG doesn’t have a line on the license application asking if you have ever smoked a Cohiba?

Traitor!

Always enjoy Cliff’s weather lessons on leftwing commie KPLU Public Radio. He is very informative and a fine teacher.

Now you’ve done it!

Just wait for the new revised renewal app forms. They never asked because they didn’t think about it and there probably isn’t a TSA jackboot around who smokes cigars who doesn’t have a stash of his own that he confiscated in order to defend the nation against communist subversion of domestic rope production.

Here is another post about the weather. Wild times in the Gulf of Alaska It’s not about the tow, just the weather. The system that hit Kodiak on the 27th was a “explosively deepening cyclone” aka “a bomb”. The post was put up on the 26th, a day before the low hit Kodiak.

The low was well forecast, 120 hrs in advance. The Aiviq wasn’t in the worse of it when they lost the tow. If they couldn’t hang onto the tow on the edge of this bomb what were the chances they would still have the tow after that thing passed? Not too good I would think. Were they planning on jogging into the SE in that shallow corner between the Trinity Islands and Kodiak Island? Bad plan.

Oh my, now the whole world knows I smoke and imbibe. Can the health police be far away?
That ain’t me over at seacaptaindate.com, I would never go there, you see, I’m not a Captain. If you saw someone who looked like me it might be my brother, Captain Fang.
