ILA - Just Pay Them Off

That doesn’t sound correct so I did a google search. Two results, both posts by you on this forum.

Much more important the government pays off college student loans. They either pick outrageously expensive colleges and major in “studies”, whatever the heck that is, then can’t get a “real job” and expect “We, the people” to bail them out. Sorry, but there isn’t any money to buy out dockworkers. :grin:

:rofl::joy:

Hahaha dude literally referenced himself!! Unbelievable yet perfectly believable.

The main point of the article is that inefficient ports are a choke point for the entire economy. The author contends that the costs of these inefficiencies to the economy is so high that the union could just be paid off and the benefits of increased efficiencies would outweigh the costs.

Devil is in the details but the proposal to ‘just pay them off’ could be a useful way to think about the issue.

I’m thinking there are no “easy answers” or “simple solutions”. Then, there is “just about everything we get comes from ‘somewhere else’”. Maybe “Made In USA” would help?

Oh it wasn’t verbatim quote, but same meaning:

Automation might be over-hyped.

It is true that U.S. ports perform poorly compared to ports around the world, but it’s hard to blame this entirely on a lack of automation. Few ports around the world are automated, and the most heavily automated ports (including in the U.S.) don’t necessarily perform the best.

That is true according to this World Bank report from 2023:

The first US port to appear on the list is Charleston at #53, followed by Philadelphia at #56 (unless I missed something)

BTW; the “automated” port of Long Beach is at #373 and Los Angeles at # 375.

I tend to agree with the methodology but important to note that it’s based purely on time in port, and doesn’t seem to account for number of cranes, total moves, moves/hour, etc.

KC- I wouldn’t mind seeing you jump on the MR thread with some thoughts, even/especially if you have a different take than I do.

I am not sure IF You listened to it. But in one of Dr. Sal videos on the issue it was clearly stated that only foreign flag ships were targeted.

;
Meaning that these greedy foreign bastards US flagged ships (HL, Big Blue and others) were not targeted.

Could have heard wrongly but must say if true, then one may suspect where it is all going . By the way this article /analyses delivered by KC was excellent.

Yes, I agree that’s there’s more to it than what was mentioned. That said I thought the second article was better on the details than the one linked in the OP.

Lots of stakeholders in port operations, shippers, terminal operators / owners, the unions, government. I don’t know enough about how that all works to have an informed opinion.

You apparently don’t know many Amish. They are persnickety about the technology they adapt, but they don’t shun technology as a whole. With the hard-core Old Order groups being an exception, most Amish have electricity but are not on the grid. If you go into most Amish shops, you will find power tools, either pneumatic or battery operated. Driving through PA, OH & IN, it’s easy to spot the Amish farms - they are the ones with solar panels and windmills on top of the barns. Many also have a diesel generator stashed somewhere. There are cases where they just have the power company run the lines underground, so their neighbors can’t see. A friend went that route, only to have I&M park a few trucks in his driveway for a week. :laughing: Nothing to see here.

I kept a horse at an Amish barn that had a battery bank that looked like it could power a submarine. They needed it for the electric waterers.

Just in regards to Amish (who fascinate me): I ride with them on the Chicago to Seattle train route. Many ( not all) have cell phones. Because they deal with the outside world in business.

One reason they ride on that route is to connect with trains to the Mexican border. They have a hospital in Mexico they go to for medical care. It’s modern medical care. They can’t afford the U.S. medical system for a lot of stuff so they have an Amish-network run place down in Mexico.

Also, here’s a fun fact: the Amish population is growing faster than the general US population. Maybe 500 years from now the USA will be majority Amish.
