REYKJAVIK, Iceland — It is just one scenario among many, but by far the most cataclysmic.
Sometime over the next 100 years, human-driven warming could disrupt a vital ocean current that carries heat northward from the tropics. After this breach, most of the world would keep getting hotter — but northern Europe would cool substantially, with Iceland at the center of a deep freeze. Climate modeling shows Icelandic winter extremes plunging to an unprecedented minus-50 degrees Fahrenheit. Sea ice could surround the country for the first time since it was settled by Vikings.
“At that point, Iceland would be one giant glacier,” said Hildigunnur Thorsteinsson, the director general of the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
Such a scenario might seem like fodder for bad science fiction, but officials and scientists here say it can no longer can be dismissed as fantasy. Several recent scientific studies, based on simulations of how the planet might respond as it warms, suggest that the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is more vulnerable to breakdown than scientists had long believed.

As a first step, Iceland has tried to remind other countries that cutting greenhouse gas emissions reduces the odds of planet-altering crises. At the United Nations’ global climate conference in November, Iceland’s climate minister told delegates that “the risk of large, abrupt change is real,” and that present-day policies could determine whether the next generation inherits “a managed transition or an unmanaged collapse.”

Not a new problem, in the next ice age (maybe 10,000 years from now), Iceland ,most of Europe and North America will be covered by glaciers anyway.

I used to pick up pottery shards and marsh grass roots in the mud on the eastern side of Stellwagen Bank, about 30 miles east of Boston, when I was fishing commercially. That was a beach at the end of the Laurentide glacier period.

We’ll be fine. A bunch of naked savages who didn’t have the wheel invented yet managed to do pretty well despite the shocking rise in global temperatures that drove sea level 30+ feet higher. I have faith.

Easy-peasy. They just need to build giant underwater turbines, powered by solar & wind energy of course that will pull the current from the Gulf of America to Iceland. I already have the plans drawn up & for 5 trillion US dollars & will sell them to Iceland. Considering how much money was made selling carbon credits & unconvenient truths in the early 2000’s I think I can make a fortune on saving Iceland if some other crook hasn’t put a fix in already.

Parts of Canada must be at least as cold as Iceland … but it seems they fudged the rate of warming (not cooling) from the dreaded “planet-altering crises”.
