As you know, Admiral John Tanner, our academy superintendent, is leaving the college on June 30, 2010. He has shared that you are interested in knowing the process in replacing the superintendent.
We have first reviewed the superintendent job description and researched superintendent descriptions at the other academies as we prepare to post the position. We expect that description to be completed in the next two weeks.
We will conduct a national search for the superintendent position this spring. We will post the position at the other five state maritime academies, the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard, and in higher education and maritime publications. We will share the posting with the Great Lakes Maritime Industry and the Academy Alumni Society.
Our process includes selecting a maximum of ten or twelve candidates for phone interviews. These interviews lead to bringing four to six candidates on campus for face-to-face interviews. These on-campus interviews include public forums where faculty, staff, and students along with interested members of the public attend presentations by the candidates and ask the candidates questions.
A list of up to three candidate finalists are submitted to the president who makes the final selection.
