No dust masks don’t work and GSF had to know that so keep records of your time on board. What recourse you may have is a good question as GSF was absorbed by RIG and who knows what will happen to them. Asbestos can be safely removed but you have to have a HEPA filter for breathing and or water mist to hold down the dust particles. I know that later GSF had the asbestos insulation in the engine room sprayed with a material that was supposed to “encapsulate” the asbestos. Basically it was just a clear spray that was said to keep the particles from being airborne. Of course if the insulation were cut the warranty would be void, I am sure.
Asbestos is scary stuff but I know people that were exposed for years with no problems. You’ll likely be fine as your exposure wasn’t long.
