I suspected you were a passed over 3rd mate with a seconds license. On one hand in a prior post you dissed 3rd mates who were trying to get ahead, that 2nd mate didn’t mean anything. We are all out here to make money to provide for our families and self. And inclined in in a prior post your displeasure with some KP guys did not meet their 5 year commitment… Now you are proud of your friend that got a decent job after sailing(If any) less than a year. Kinda talking out both sides of your mouth. Quite a talent I would not be proud of. But still in the maritime community. Good for him, he is not in the vast majority of academy grads, perhaps he had connections (Or family) with many of the grads that formed a business that catered to the industry. Most of them don’t get in because of “Connections” . They get in because of work in the classroom and leadership skills ,on or off the field.I would insist that the poster “Arya” go into this business with eyes wide open. There are many opportunities, do your homework, and visit all the sites, of all the respective schools. To “Slick cam1” I confess, I used to think that way many, many years ago, but have a different opinion now, knowing what all academy guys go through. A few are shitheads, but most are decent fellows just looking to make a good living and wage.
SeaEagle, I know you are a level headed guy, but there are and have been way too damn many folks coming out of KP to do ANYTHING but sail. And we all here know that.
I am not passed over. I am a 3rd mate with a 3rd mate license. I am not proud of my friend for shirking his service obligation either. Simply an example. Do us all a favor and quit assuming things.
I get your drift Slick cam, but have a feeling they are in the minority. Agree, one is too many, that is not unlike the other academy’s too. I am impressed that this young man is seeking advice from us old timers to make a very important career choice. My fingers are crossed for him.
Capt Phoenix is throwing you a nugget of info you are seeking “Arya1222”. a well respected participant on this site. Take him up on it if just to chat a bit.
My son applied to all the state maritimes except Texas this year. His grades were OK and composite ACT was under 20. he got in all five, except Great Lakes offered engineer instead of deck as it was full . Mass offered a partial scholarship, so he went with that.
I recommend that you research each school, as it is less about where you go and more about what is the best fit for you. If you are an athlete or have another extra curricular, contact the coach or club and see if they can help. These are all small schools so it helps if you intend to participate in athletics or clubs.
1100 SAT is a little better than average. It places you in the top 59th percentile and equivalent to a 21 ACT. You would likely need to boost that score if KP is at the top of your list as they have limited spots for each state with a congressional nomination required and that process will start earlier than others. KP has 22% acceptance rate, Typical SAT 1210 to 1280 and ACT 26-28. State schools are great too and will follow a typical timeline for college apps. My son is a junior and looking as well.
Good luck!
Good advice gMate. I was incorrect regarding my sons GPA to get into KP. His math score was 740 and verbal 580 for a combined 1320. The writing was 550 which did not count towards his total.I talked to him yesterday, he said if he had to do it over again he would go engineer from the job availability as it is now. He ,as other posters on here recommends that although you have a decent SAT score, you should retake the test… A number of his friends from the football team chose engine, a few work and live locally and had no problem getting jobs , the ones at MSC have a shorter wait for ships than the deckies. Two of them (Engineers) as well as my son are football coaches locally. two at High School level and one at Middle School. And do mention football when you are looking at the different schools.
I can chip in here a bit. I worked several jobs and different times when I was in high school, and was a three season “athlete” (if you knew me, you would understand the quotes). I know that they also lie to see activities in the community, but they are not necessary.
It all depends on you. Marine engineering (straight) is certainly sufficient if your goal is to be a sailing engineer. Technology, or Systems is a “tougher” program that is better suited if you want to move into design. Neither is easy, truth be told. I had the option of Systems, but I didn’t chose it, largely because I didn’t feel that it fit my needs. . .
Are you sure? Generally, marine engineering is used to describe a fully accredited 4 year engineering degree. I’ve always seen “technology” used for less rigorous non-accredited programs - often only 2-years of study
Ironically, I took my own advice and retested twice for my SAT. Neither time did I get as high as my first time. Go figure. As far the other poster stating that KP grads NOT sailing, I would beg to differ. I DO acknowledge that there are some, more than a few, that get in as a foil for getting into the service. Do I like that? Hell now. I also have quite a few classmates that are still sailing, and many that sailed and are retired, and others, like me, that sailed for quite a few years and came ashore and are still working in the industry. As I state many times, I don’t like stereotypes of any kind and certainly consider then to hinder one’s outlook on life.
Everyone here talking about attending KP. (So far) I haven’t read any mention that this is a Federal Academy that requires a congressional appointment.
Or has that changed??
You can be a stellar person, but if you don’t get appointed, it doesn’t matter, right?
All the Maritime schools are mentioned. And yes,you do need a congressional nomination for KP and the other Federal schools. The appointment is awarded by the school’s selection committee, after you get the nomination. The times to interview by the congressmen in your area is generally in late fall to early winter. Each state is different and the times are announced . Could be wrong, but don’t think you need a nomination for USCG Academy, which also plays Division 3 football as does USMMA. All the others are Div1. They both play in the"NewMac" conference. Getting the nomination doesn’t guarantee an appointment, just part of the semi-complicated process.
