Former sea captain building an offline Android tool for deck officers — feedback welcome

Hello everyone,

I’m a former sea captain, and I’ve been building an Android app called CaptainCalc for masters and deck officers.

The goal is simple: one practical tool for everyday onboard use, especially when internet access is limited or unavailable at sea.

It currently focuses on things like:

  • draft survey

  • stability support calculations

  • voyage-related calculations

  • celestial navigation tools

  • maritime reference content

I’m not trying to pitch this as a replacement for approved systems. It is a support tool only and not a replacement for approved loading computers, official stability booklets, ECDIS, or primary navigation procedures. Safe navigation and operational decisions remain with the master and bridge team.

I’m posting here because I’d genuinely like feedback from people who actually sail.

A few things I’d especially like to hear:

  • What calculations or workflows do you still do manually onboard?

  • What do existing maritime apps get wrong?

  • What would make an app like this genuinely useful enough to keep on your phone?

If anyone is willing to take a look, I’d really appreciate honest criticism and suggestions from working mariners.

Thanks.
