A study shows that fatigue is a bigger problem in shipping due to the pandemic:
Fatigue is still causing accidents regardless of how many studies are performed:
PS> Now we know why the Fitzgerald and McLean got into trouble; bad mattresses!!
That’s like saying 95% of highway fatalities are caused by cars and trucks.
I had to give up working at sea and offshore because the fatigue was impacting my mental health.
Working night shifts then getting woken during the day by noise and drills etc, was just too much for me.
Life is good offshore for the people who only do day shifts and can get a good sleep, but it is hard for the people who have to do night shifts.
Spot on. Until the industry stops treating rest hour logs like a creative writing exercise, nothing is going to change. We all know you can’t run a 2-on-2-off or 6-on-6-off schedule for months and expect the brain to actually function at 100%. it’s a study that actually reflects what’s happening on deck, not just in a classroom.
