Definition of machinery spaces

Wondering if anyone has a USCG link to their definition of “machinery spaces” in regards to bilge water management practices and Oil Record book entries. I’ve encountered a couple of different interpretations of what spaces onboard a ship must be treated as “machinery spaces”. I’ve always treated the regulations as meaning any space that has machinery with oil in it that can get into the bilge water in the space. All that water has to be treated as possibly oil contaminated and be processed thru an OWS to put it overboard. Some industrial vessels look at this differently and think the regs only mean engine rooms. Many spaces on industrial vessels have some machine or tank or piping system in them that can leak oil into the bilges and should be considered machinery spaces in terms of ORB application.

What type of vessel are you referring to?

Over 400 ton USCG inspected US flagged industrial vessel - non/tanker

ABS rule is determined by how much power is in that area

Matches international convention definitions:

Should be listed on your IOPP what spaces and tanks you need to be concerned with.
Should be listed on your IOPP what spaces and tanks you need to be concerned with.
The IOPP (Form A Supplement) does not list spaces, only tanks.

The post by Jamesbrown is correct.
