Deepwater Horizon - Transocean Oil Rig Fire
Forgive me if this has been discussed already…it’s all starting to run together… What is the consensus on why the Deepwater Horizon actually sunk? Thanks for your input.
Gotta agree with Alcor on this one, pretty much pure speculation. Several folks raised concerns about all the firefighting water being the sole cause. Possible I suppose, especially given that there were several explosions which could have breached areas of the columns. Also possible some of the folks left many of the watertight doors open during their escape (completely understandable). Some speculation on my part . . . after a couple days with a fire of the intesity we saw burning, all the rubber watertight door seals were gone and the doors and plating would be so warped I’m sure there was no watertight integrity in any of the columns. I have seen enginerooms where the fire only burned for 5-6 hours and the handrails were melted like taffy & all the aluminium in the space had liquified & run into the bilges. I can only imagine the amount of heat and deformation stresses which were placed on the hull structure & it actually say quite a lot about the naval architects who designed her & the quality of steel used in her construction that she stayed afloat as long as she did.
