Deepwater Horizon - Transocean Oil Rig Fire
It sounds quite assinine to me not to run the lockdown ring immediately upon setting & testing before displacing the riser & underbalancing the well.
You mean you didn’t open the choke to bleed off before opening the annular ?
The Night Pusher didn’t line up correctly. Therefore, when we read ‘0’ pressure we expected it to be ‘o’. The gas pocket was perhaps due to old mud ‘fermenting’. The well was 8 years old. The gas stopped after 2 mins. I believe some folk went to the lifeboats. I went to the coffee shop for a smoke, but thought better of it when I got there, due to the obvious circumstances…which weren’t initially obvious to me.

To be honest, an experience like that opens your eyes to all the worst case scenarios in the most mundane jobs.
On my rig, Pit Cleaning requires a permit, an SJA, three people involved, a gas sniffer, an evacuation tripod above the pit with plan in place, BA sets, and only then can you start the work.
I recall 22 years ago when a derrickman entered the slug pit to clean it. Problem was he hadn’t shut off the agitator. He kept quiet about it due to embarrassment but his leg was never the same.
I’m digressing.
