Deepwater Horizon - Transocean Oil Rig Fire

[QUOTE=bnhpr;34640]What other type of drilling is there? Water wells? Coring?

What kind of drilling is there? Let’s see, drilling operations I have worked on/overseen: starting with augers, solid stem and hollow stem to 24’ diameter, bucket auger caissons with kelly bar rig in rock to 6-foot diameter, air-rotary, mud-rotary, reverse-circulation dual wall percussion hammer, large diameter water supply cable tool drilling with both bailing and air and mud return, sonic drilling, dry and with water and mud circulation, horizontal drilling for large diameter pipeline installations, rock coring of all kinds, including a continuously cored wireline 18,500’ deep geotechnical boring through 11,500 feet of fractured basalt flows into tuff for a proposed plutonium reactor. Now I own a company doing cone penetration testing and other insitu testing. I’m no threat to Fugro, but do what they do.

Regarding who told me what, nobody told me, I was asking the question. Regarding the difficulty, I understand, still, knowing where your tooling is is fundamental. I can imagine that not knowing where your drill string sets is a serious handicap, but joints are different lengths? Really? There’s no way to recalibrate your depth so you don’t put the joint where the shears will be?
