Coffee in the CFR's
Who drinks coffee? I always thought that was just for decoration. I thought real men just got up and went to work in the morning.
“No coffee, no steam”
Starbucks has been terrible (hardly any better than folgers) ever since they switched to their Pikes Place blend… Pete’s is slightly better but still no good. The quality Keurig blends are the next step up but I won’t drink them. Dunkin Donuts is the cheapest coffee that’s drinkable (if you grind it yourself). The next step up is any light or medium bean roasted locally in the last few weeks.

 • Note on locally roasted coffee: get the light or medium roast because dark roast just means the beans have been over cooked… If you want it strong - like I do - then get espresso blend, not dark regular blend

If you are working offshore like it’s 2013 then you can afford the good stuff: Verve.

If you’ve got the deep pockets of a pilot then get the primo stuff: Blue Bottle

But if you want the best then get the Haranga blend from here: http://honeycocoffee.com
Some of us are on coolie wages; I used to buy Hawaiian kona blends by the pound but had to give that up. But I will check those out- thanks!

I was in the Navy. We don’t drink it; we take it intravenously.

I remember back when my Wife and I first started dating. The first morning I was up first, I made the Coffee. It has been over 15 years now and I am still not allowed to make coffee for her. It was something about the spoon standing up in the cup that she did not like. LMAO
SLO Roast is good, maybe one notch below Verve, but Honeyco, also roasted in San Luis Obispo, is better. If you’re in the area stop by Kruezberg… Our favorite coffeehouse!
such a typically erudite Californian coffee snob you are…if I was going to be a snob for anything, I’d be a whiskey snob

anyway John, being the highly educated man you are, what is your opinion of the coffee which comes out the poopers of those Asian Civet kitties?

of course, although it says “fair trade” how fair is it for the civets? what does Joe Boss pay them for their labors? Beans!

I say it is high time for the civets to band together and demand a contract of employment through collective bargaining…no contract, then no shit!

coffee beans coming out of anyone’s ass would still be better than folgers.

Sounds like my wife.

I’ve always said, if the aroma alone isn’t enough to make you want to rush to the head and go #2, it aint strong enough!

LMAO! So true!

Barista Prima Coffeehouse Italian Roast is hard to beat and it doesn’t spew out of an ass.

I think the entire conversation is hilarious. The amount of money people are willing to pay for a bean that grows on a tree is insane. Coffee snobs are worse than the crowd that spends hundreds for a bottle of fermented grapes. When I was growing up coffee was A&P, if you could afford it, Luzianne for poor folks and Maxwell House for the average person. The finest restaurants served Maxwell House, freshly ground. When Folgers came out it was the hottest thing on the market, the Starbucks of its day. Coffee was the drug that got you moving in the morning, no more, no less. A cup didn’t cost as much as a gallon of gasoline either. In retrospect I guess I should feel deprived, I didn’t have enough money to pay for coffee out of a litter box if it had been available. Silly me, I would have considered digested coffee …shit.

I just googled it…does it come in any other packaging besides a K-cup?

Eight O’Clock is good and we drink that at home most of the time.

Eight O’Clock is good, that’s the old A&P coffee, got some in my cupboard now. I admit to liking Dunkin Donuts too, smells great. I have bought coffee beans all over the world, the best I have had is Haitian Bleu but there is no way I will pay the price they ask in the USA for that stuff, $15+ a pound is too much for a laxative… Eight O’Clock works for me 6 days a week, Dunkin Donuts is my Sunday paper reading treat.

I second that. The aero press is the best and you can travel with it. With some peets Ethiopian supernatural or Uzuri African. Peets is the best I’ve had and that one from SLO I heard is pretty cryp too.

Because I’m not a hypocrite, I only drink organic beans, from companies that are Fair Trade, use union labor, have a non-gender based payscale for employees, institute measures to minimize their carbon footprint, use scrubbers in their ethanol fueled bean roasters for cleaner emissions, pro-gay marriage, price/cost per pound that’s based on an income sliding scale, use no MSG’s, and are dolphin friendly!

So what’s your favorite Whisky? I am currently on a Laphroig 10 kick when I am in the mood for smoke and I am buying Shieldaig Spayside Single Malt 12yr from total wine when I want something on the fruity side. I know Shieldaig does not make whisky but rather buys others and puts the Shieldaig label on it but for 30.00 a bottle I can’t beat it. I also drink everything on the rocks so a lot of the older and or higher priced stuff is lost on me.

Yep, Eight O’Clock is what we bought at the local A&P back when I grew up in the Bronx. It’s still a great daily cuppa.

Must be some weak ass coffee you drink in USA http://www.caffeineinformer.com/caffeine-what-the-world-drinks

I’ve had coffee in Europe and even make Greek/turkish coffee in an ibrik from time to time, but I have to watch my caffeine intake these days or my heart rate soars.

Also, I buy whole bean and grind it each time. Tastes good to me, that’s what counts!
CG 704 (Rev) 3-67 the “Forecastle Card” - I had one posted at the house for a while till one of the kids took it down. ( “said crew agree to conduct themselves in an orderly, faithful, honest, and sober manner…”)

It calls for 3/4 ounce of Coffee (green berry) a day. Also salt pork, beans, rice, corn meal etc.
My first foreign trip in 1970, we had to sign articles in the presence of the shipping commissioner. Us kids were joking about the victual allowance on the card. There were minimum allotments for water also. The old CM pointed out it wasn’t a joking matter when he started shipping.

I saw a show on NATGEO about coffee and they had an outfit that was selling coffee which had been through the digestive system of elephants. It was something like $50 per cup! That’s just crazy. And the poor elephant makes peanuts too!

That’s a great line. I may have to steal it.

So you’re the one chained up to the anchor chain?
