Captain Phillips Movie Trailer

I appreciate that, but when a man is wrong he’s wrong… ( but thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt). You’re a class act.

Thanks for the link. Hope I’ll be able to watch this movie one way or the other.

I’m sorry, exactly what were you trying to say? Your quote “I don’t think the crew has a chance in court, they don’t have enough money.” not sure where you were going.

The unlicensed crew sues at the drop of a hat, the Chief Cook or was it the Chief Steward had a law suit filed shortly after landing back in the US.

I have seen many unlicensed crew pay their own way home if they absolutely had to but most just go to the doctor.[/QUOT-

Chief your apology accepted. I am sorry back for being an ass about this whole thing, Sometimes I need to tame it down. I just have a low opinion of attorneys and think they have stymied our way of life. Maybe you can help me out, is the crewmen’s filing backed by the SIU? or did they file on their own?
To my knowledge the SIU has never been directly involved in any of the lawsuits filed by its members. I should not of drug the name of the SIU down as I did above, when I said “SIU” I should of said the “unlicensed crew” in general not the Union. My mistake, please see above quote for corrected text.

According to BMP 4:

A Safe Muster Point is a short-term safe haven, which will provide ballistic protection should the pirates commence firing
with small arms weaponry or RPGs

and;

A Citadel is a designated pre-planned area purpose built into the
ship where, in the event of imminent boarding by pirates, all crew
will seek protection. A Citadel is designed and constructed to resist
a determined pirate trying to gain entry for a fixed period of time.

The decision to use a citadel vs a safe muster point is mostly up to the owners as it requires a significant modification of the ship, it has nothing to do with unions. Some ships have beefed up muster areas and keep drinking water etc but in most cases they don’t meet the criteria for a citadel My own observation is that citadels are used on the “low and slow” as a lower cost option to hiring armed security

As far as rules of engagement, the Coast Guard has specific language regarding what threshold has to be crossed before the use of deadly force can be used. I don’t recall the exact wording but the ship being fired upon is specifically mentioned as being sufficient justification to return fire and there is no requirement to wait until attackers are inside the rail.

I’m bringing up an old thread here and with it all the talk involved around one key player. However, as an American and a mariner, I was really proud to be both when I found out about this story, years before the movie. I was so proud of those mariners on board on how they fended off a couple of knuckle head thugs. When the movie broke I was awash with arguments for the bravery of the captain, which like most of yous, I argued against. But what about the crew? How cool is that that our own country men fended off a couple of third world thugs. In this day and age when so many buckle under the fear of liability, the boys on that boat said ‘fuck you’ to a couple of machine gun wielding maniacs and persevered. I think they are the real heroes here. Anybody with me?
