Btw Crowley won’t take you as a mate until you’ve got a 1600t Mate Oceans. They are desperate for people cause it’s a crappy job. Mates there don’t handle the boat unless you’ve got previous experience. AB jobs there aren’t great cause you do very little deck work & it also requires little skill.
Yes. regardless of the courses i take, i know i will be going in as a AB. But i will still be ahead of the game with the course while i do the time to qualify for the 1600 ton.
The only thing that scares me about Crowley right now is how good is it gonna look on my resume for future jobs. Because the feedback here is not the best if u know what i mean. Seem like i can have all the paperwork and be qualify, but if is attach to the name of Crowley is gonna take some credibility out, and that is a concern.
It is a job, it gets u experience and seatime, and unlike the government the won’t be bouncing because of a bunch of cry babies in DC. U r starting out, don’t worry about it.
Dont worry about that. I know people that have worked for the worst Mom and Pops outfits for several years and when they mention that they have worked in X or Y place people know that if they made it there with all the BS they can make it any place in the business.
Crowley is highly critized because you dont expect some of the stuff they do when you see how big they are and the name they have.
But it wont look bad for you, just for them (crowley) as a company.

That makes sense. Thanks Orion. Eventually i will be looking for a Harbor Tugboat job. thats my goal, but for now, like Senior says… Experience and Seatime
Where are you stationed? If you want experience on a harbor tug you can work for Moran Ny or Norfolk. They also do coastwise towing.
Im station on Upstate NY in the Thousand Islands. On a Small boat station.
I been thinking ro call or drive by NY Harbor and just start so conversation with the guys there. See how the market is moving with them.
In 2011, I got my TOSS 3 days after requesting it.
Also, Im active duty BM2 as well and am doing my AB online through the Maritime Institute in San Diego. Doing it as we speak so I can leave AK with the seatime for a 1600 Mate and 500 Master.

Very nice! Just make sure is gonna help u with the 1600t because I believe u need to have time holding the 100 and 200 ton in order to count. Part or the seatime has to be holding does endorsements
If you are looking for some good, free for active duty members, training…check out CIVMAR (MSC) in San Diego at the Navy Base. They have ABS, STCW BST, RFPNW, and Advance Shipboard Fire Fighting. Again, all for FREEEEE for active duty members. The Navy base has cheep TDY berthing if you can’t work it out at Sector San Diego. I found it was cheeper for me to pay for round trip air fare from Tampa to SD to take the course than to take advanced fire fighting at a commercial school in FL. All these courses are recognized and accepted by the USCG NMC and certificates are good for one year from date completion. Something to think about.
I request mine a while back and haven’t got mine yet. It says it can take up to 90 days. Is that realistic?
Thanks
I received mine from my Yeoman at PSC Topeka in about two days via email. If you have not seen it after about a week you need to call to get an update.
