Hello, I’m an E-5 Machinist Mate in the Navy. I entered the service as an Engineman due to color vision issues but was forced converted when the Navy needed more auxilary techs to assume the MM rate. I want to continue a career at sea but not with the Navy. At MEPS I failed both the plate test and falant light test but it did say very explicitly on the medical form that I could distinguish between definate reds and greens. Is this going to hinder my ability to work on merchant vessels in an engineering department? The Coast Guard guidelines seem a bit vague to me. They say I have to be able to distinguish between red, green, blue, and yellow, which I do perfectly fine on my ship. I just don’t know if those color tests are going to hurt me. Thanks in advance for the responses.
