Another bridge incident - Mexican sail training vessel Cuauhtémoc

Another Instagram perspective. It is evident that the main engine is running astern throughout. Mechanical failure perhaps.

In the above video I saw at least one real sailor climbing back into the rigging to help his shipmates. Cheers to him or her.

The US Coast Guard ship was originally confiscated from Germany (Nazis) post WWII. Was built for Hilter and tis a beautiful irony to now be named the Eagle and to train US Coast Guard cadets of all races, creeds, colors, and religions! Thank you Greatest Generation, the world will always be in your debt.

Information about the 2 young people who perished. A young lady from Xalapa, Veracruz who recently boarded & young gentleman from Oaxaca who had been on for 9 months traveling the world.

And another perspective…….look at that prop wash.

… showing that, contrary to what I had thought, current was not the significant factor.

From the first Instagram, the tug is running hard towards her stern. The training vessel carried significant sternway prior to allision.

This is one of my nightmare scenarios, heading towards a low or closed bridge with the current taking me towards it and some mechanical failure. Between the water depth and current, was dropping the anchor(s) viable?

US Navy will fly a huge flag at time returning or departing for deployment.

There is no good reason to release the assist tug before the vessel is moving in the right direction and engine is operating properly. Add proximity to the bridge and strong current its either carelessness or incompetence

Using tugs on tall ships can be tricky. Using a small Mac boat or Moran is way to large on tall ships or any small ship. Tug dominates and harder to handle. So after being pulled of the dock, the tug would be released.

Looking at multiple videos it looked like she was backing the whole time. Why they didn’t do an emergency stop on engine will be one of the questions. I wonder if controllable pitch or bitch. Hated CP as control issues happen a lot. Even heard of ship depart shipyard, some where the controls were backward tried slowing headway while backing on came ahead.

Taught at an early age the 3 things before collision or allision.
Sound danger signal
Drop both anchors
Back full

Never did see anchor go out.

Obviously the emergency back some of the other could have been done.

She allided with the bridge at 5.9 knots.

The history of Barque Eagle, ex Horst Wessel:

She is one of 5 Gorch Fock-class Barques built between 1933 and 1958:

Now that is just sad. “Ship hits bridge and at least two sailors die” and you immediately think “Trump” although you have to go with “Orange Man”. I did not vote for Biden but never have I ever called him “Bidum” or a Demonrat" or used the term “Heels Up Harris” because that is just wrong. Nuff Said.

Pretty decent article. She has a CPP on her.

CPP or not CPP fitted Mcy stop by a push button or by other means should be available although time for reaction in this case was terribly short and w/ o tethered tug and w/o deploying anchors stopping might not have helped.

TERRIBLE Loss of young lives

Hey @spowiednick , it’s bad form to make a good comment, get a couple of “likes” on it, then go back to edit it to throw some jabs at someone. I think Mr Mercoglian is doing a fine job running his series without either of our inputs.
