I believe BP and Transocean had a liitle to do with temporarily shutting down GOM drilling. By the end of Obama’s 1st term drilling was back up to speed, constrained only by the oil companies reluctance to make long term investments due to lower demand for oil, thus lower prices.
Oil companies don’t care what political party is in power, only the price of oil. Look at the dowward spiral in offshore drilling in the GOM and world wide while Trump was in office.
Why do American flagged vessels use riding gang members from the Philippines, Poland and Kenya? Aren’t there enough American welders, electricians and painters for those jobs?
It was a Polish riding gang on El Faro. My guess is their bid was lower $$$ overall. Or only bid which perhaps was unlikely. Take your pick. Sad, whatever nationality they chose, they would have never made it home.
The largest lobbying group in Washington is Big Pharm, and they have been for many years.
It’s why we pay ten times more for our prescriptions than our neighbors to the north in Canada.
Congress refuses to let Medicare use its tremendous bargaining power to confront the drug companies and get the prices down.
And both sides of the aisle have been sucking on the Big Pharm teat for a long time now so change is not in the air anytime soon.
Try AIPAC and the ADL… those are the most powerful.
Not all the rank and file. I’ve never given a dime to the PAF and never will. All MEBA officials bend over for Dems and talk like MSM about Republicans.
Can someone help me understand what Obama was trying to do just before the Macondo incident (Deepwater Horizon tragedy)?
I just want to better understand what that administration’s plans were.
@Chippin, maybe you can help me. The following is a link to the news of the day:
Obama plans to open up the East Coast to offshore drilling
By the way, I am by no means, a so-called democrat, most certainly I am NOT a liberal; being brought up in a conservative environment at home, feel more as a conservative. I just want to hear an objective opinion neither slamming the former President nor honoring him.
so which gov and when did they do anything for the Merchant fleet and crew?
It doesn’t matter which developed country you pick no country has any interest in protecting mariners who are citizens of the country engaged in international trade. Farmers, business owners and powerful company owners see seafarers as a necessary evil to be hired from the cheapest source with the least industrial muscle possible.
Ship owners using FOC shipping and low or no tax domiciled companies make enough donations to keep the politicians fed and watered while making pious statements about how much they value their staff. International shipowners make 18th century mill owners look like philanthropists.
Aren’t you special. Why don’t you tell us all about how Trump made us great again. At least Biden hasn’t fired someone by deranged tweet in the last hour.
Guess what Trump screeched about today? A “junky” (sic) race horse which stood as proof the nation needs him back. Argle bargle.
I agree, its far far more important that we see no more mean tweets than it is to secure the borders or keep American industries from going overseas. Its A-OK that we rely on covid ravaged India for a large chunk of our medicines instead of them being manufactured here.
All Hail Uncle Joe, the most popular president EVER!!!
And why are you still keeping up with what Trump says? If he is such a dummy why should you care what he has to say?
Because he is a malignant disease consuming American society. His metastatic cult is spreading the disease widely. That disease has already labeled the USA as one of the world’s greatest threats to democracy.
You are correct comrade, evil Orange man is a blight to free people everywhere. USA is a terrible tyrannical country where no one has any rights. Or at least it was until MOST POPULAR PRESIDENT EVER Comrade Joe saved us from tyranny of orange man.
Evil orange man’s policies of securing borders, cutting regulations to foster job growth and a return of manufacturing, along with an intrest in equalizing trade between countries was a most terrible thing. I, for one, am very glad borders are wide open to allow my betters to flood the country and live off of our most benevolent govt while I work my life away and pay crippling taxes. I deserve it after all. I am glad the trade imbalance is increasingly in the favor of a truly fair country such as China. They deserve to take our manufacturing away so that we may be dependent on them and under their heel.
Not entirely sure why the 180, most Dems talk out of both sides of their head. Always wanting their cake and to eat it too. This is why you can’t believe anything a politician says, particularly a lefty.
I’m sure he decided, with due pressure from environmental extremists and after getting a few oil companies in his back pocket, to reverse course to save face to leave a “cleaner” legacy.
“For decades we’ve talked about how our dependence on foreign oil threatens our economy — yet our will to act rises and falls with the price of a barrel of oil," Obama said during a speech at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He also praised the military’s efforts to operate ships, tanks and planes on alternative fuels.” -Obama
“There will be those who strongly disagree with this decision,” said Obama, who was accompanied by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. “But what I want to emphasize is that this announcement is part of a broader strategy that will move us from an economy that runs on fossil fuels and foreign oil to one that relies more on homegrown fuels and clean energy.”
-Obama
“Any new offshore drilling will be a stain on President Obama’s climate legacy,” May Boeve, executive director of the group 350.org, said in a statement Monday. “If the president is going to meet the targets he agreed to at the climate talks in Paris, he needs to keep fossil fuels in the ground or in this case, under the sea. We can’t afford any more oil spilling into the oceans and carbon pouring into the atmosphere.”

The main problem is that American yards are far too expensive and also highly unproductive even compared to European yards. Also american crew is very expensive and usally are not doing much in terms of maintenance. The Jones act has made them all complacent and uncompetitive. It is the same system as in South America, very good for the ones who are in but bad for everybody else. And this system has killed, almost completly, the coaster trade. Only bigger ships can somewhat manage with the high cost burden. Main issue is and remains the lack of competion.
