A solar eclipse on August 2nd is possible, but not this year.

One of the prerequisites for seeing a solar eclipse anywhere on Earth is the time of our New Moon.
This year, New Moon is on July 24, 2025 (this Thursday), and again on August 23, 2025

GPS spoofing, or trusting your screens more than your eyes?:

Actually it is non of the above and not even a ship:

Rockall is maybe the most d isolated place in the world. Yet every seafarer that has relied on BBC Shipping forecast is very familiar with the name:

At 69.792° N 108.241° W on Victoria Island, Nunavut, a lake contains an island that holds a second lake with a third-order island. Verified by satellite imagery and highlighted by National Geographic, this is the only known example of a lake on an island in a lake on an island in a lake.

An island without cars, RøvÌr, Haugesund, Norway:

Norwegian text, but translate well

Then there is the island of Sark, part of the Channel Islands.

Yes the car free island of Sark:

It does have some motorized means of transport though:

Otherwise you can get around by “tourbuses” looking like this:

It was also the last feudal state in Europe:

But still maintain Norman law:

Why is the Isle of Man technically not part of the UK?

Technically? We never have been or never will be part of the U.K (Since 1866) except when it suites us, such as ordering goods from Amazon. Try ordering to a Isle of Mann address and you “get sorry, this item is out of stock-we don’t know when it will be.” Make that address Isle of Mann, U.K. and suddenly your order is dispatched!

Previously to 1866 the Isle of Mann had been ruled by Norway, Orkney, Scotland and England
Meanwhile we have our own government, headed by The Lord of Mann, King Charles iii, setting our own laws and taxes. We also have our own currency, although English, Scottish and Irish currency are accepted.:

We have our own high speed railways:

As well as our modern tram network:

We have our own (Top secret) Navy:

The destroyer “Ben-my-Chree”

And high speed gun boat:

“Mareel Sepia! cunningly disguised as a fisher protection vessel

We have our own Air Force:

Cunningly disguised as a commercial airline.

We have the longest racecourse in the world:

Cunningly disguised as public roads.

We are not part of:

We are:

Manx, And proud of it.

A warm welcome waits anyone who disagrees!:

Although visitors are welcome to spend their Manx pounds in our shops!:

We have the little people who live in our Glens and at Fairy Bridge:

but don’t call them that or the will send…:

Wishing all of you a Happy Hop-tu-Naa!

South Georgia was once “home” to Norwegians and Brits operating two major whaling station, called Grytviken and Stromness.

Some parts of Grytviken have now been partly restored and a Museum have opened it’s doors to more and more visitors:

And are regular visits by expedition cruise ships on the way to/from Antarctica in the southern summer season:

South Georgia Heritage Trust is now making an effort to preserve some of the buildings at Stromness associated with British Polar Explorer Ernest Shackleton:

PS: In the 1960’s I sailed with several who had been whalers and spent time on South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands.
I remember especially a Master I sailed with as 1st Mate in 1966-67 who had overwintered at Grytviken several times.
He didn’t talk much, but he did talk a bit about his time there, which he remembered fondly.

Up until the Falklands war the whaling stations at South Georgia were like a time capsule. A lot of senseless vandalism took place after that. It is good to see that there is a belated effort at preservation. The museum could have been so much better.
