First I’ve heard of this. Surprised it wasn’t on the Duluth stations.
Don’t know if there was a mechanical problem, but lining up for the Rock Cut always has to be a challenge on a vessel that size.
The aerial photo includes the house where Pat Norton lived. Her comment was that this probably happens every other year.

It was human error: The relief master was showing a new third mate how to use the radar to assist in making the turn into rock cut. A power surge temporarily disabled the radar. On a thousand footer there are forward and aft radars. When the radar was re-energized they failed to check which radar scanner was enabled… It was the after one, not what they ASS-U-ME-D they were using…hence, they botched the turn. Not sure on damage costs…
