The Rules

The gCaptain Forum is a private, moderated forum for the exchange of information between maritime professionals and individuals who are interested in maritime technology, culture, and affairs. It is the policy of gCaptain that forum discussion take place in an atmosphere of courtesy, mutual respect, and professionalism.

Moderators have the right to enforce the above policy by removing any content and any user account for any reason at any time. Grounds for removal include, but are not limited to, actions which moderators judge to be:

Falsification of material information about oneself, such as name, age, gender, citizenship, experience and service record.

Presenting false or misleading information with the intent to deceive

Personal attacks on other users, either directly or by associating them with discredited groups.

Violation of the intellectual property rights of others.]

Exposing personal information of other users without their permission.

Threats or intimidation.

Commercial advertising and political sloganeering which is not relevant to the topic being discussed.

Actions of individual moderators can be appealed to the group of moderators as a whole. The decisions of that group are final.

Who is it for?

Most of our members are seasoned mariners working on ships and other vessels, both coastal and ocean-going, of all types but we also have a large number of shoreside professionals and ship enthusiasts. All maritime professionals from seaman to CEO are welcome to participate.

Why should you participate?

Reading these posts and engaging with other gCaptain forum members offers many benefits including learning more about ships and our industry, building relationships with members from around the world and sharing information that will make you a better/safer mariner.

Improve the Discussion

Help us make this a great place for discussion by always working to improve the discussion in some way, however small. If you are not sure your post adds to the conversation, think over what you want to say and try again later.

One way to improve the discussion is by discovering the ones already written. Please spend some time browsing the topics here before replying or starting your own, and you’ll have a better chance of meeting others who share your interests.

Your Participation Counts

Discourse provides tools that enable the community to collectively identify the best (and worst) contributions: favorites, bookmarks, likes, flags, replies, edits, and so forth. Use these tools to improve your own experience, and everyone else’s, too.

If You See a Problem, Flag It

Moderators have special authority; they are responsible for this forum. But so are you. With your help, moderators can be community facilitators, not just janitors or police.

When you see bad behavior, don’t reply. It encourages the bad behavior by acknowledging it, consumes your energy, and wastes everyone’s time. Just flag it. If enough flags accrue, action will be taken, either automatically or by moderator intervention.

Keep It Tidy

Make the effort to put things in the right place, so that we can spend more time discussing and less cleaning up. So:

  • Don’t start a topic in the wrong category.
  • Don’t cross-post the same thing in multiple topics.
  • Don’t post no-content replies.
  • Don’t divert a topic by changing it midstream.
  • Don’t sign your posts — every post has your profile information attached to it.

Rather than posting “+1” or “Agreed”, use the Like button. Rather than taking an existing topic in a radically different direction, use Reply as a Linked Topic.

Terms of Service

Yes, legalese is boring, but we must protect ourselves – and by extension, you and your data – against unfriendly folks. We have a Terms of Service describing your (and our) behavior and rights related to content, privacy, and laws. To use this service, you must agree to abide by our TOS.

##What can you find here?

We host a number of topics on a variety of topics related to ships and the offshore oil and gas industry. Many of our posts are discussions about news that we publish on the homepage or specific questions people have about their job in the industry. The only maritime topics we actively discourage are those of a highly political nature.
