Retired physician. I have been a small boat sailor all my life. Being a Viet Nam era guy, I narrowly escaped the draft by managing a Public Health Service commission right out of internship. Served 2 years at the Marine Hospital in Galveston, my second as Chief of Outpatient Services, which included being the Quarantine Officer for the Port of Galveston-Houston (boarded via a few rope ladders!). Conducted Coast Guard sick call every day, took the occasional C.G. helicopter flight as a med. officer and took care of C.G. personnel & families, merchant mariners of all kinds and (even) commercial fishermen (in those days). Anyone with military ID or a Z card! Got my “Surgeon” M.M. license (but never used it!). Sailed a 37’ aux. sailboat in PacNW near shore and inland waters for many years (too old now!). On the beach now but just enjoy hearing talk of the sea!
