Sailed on the Great Lakes for Inland Steel Co on the SS Joseph Block, as deckhand in 11/59, at age of 18. Drafted in '64, served in the Army’s Navy as crewman on landing craft (LCM-8), Ft Eustis, Va. Ordered to S. Vietnam 5/65 - 3/66, Quinhon at start of serious hostilities. Quinhon had very limited facilities for deep draft ships, so our 25 LCM8s were desperately needed to assist in unloading increasing # of anchored ships. After Army stint, returned to Lakes as AB Wheelsman, for 1 year. Retired from steamboating then.
