When I first read of the El Faro I said “Why didn’t they go west?” It is a known route but a bit longer. Any other decision is made consists of “we should be OK IF” With a single screw all ones eggs are in that IF basket. They chose to risk it to save a day or two because of COD, interest and business concerns regarding money. Anyone with a modicum of understanding of the seagoing freight business understands that but in a protected Jones Act trade? The people in Puerto Rico would have waited a day or two for their things. They sure will be waiting longer now.
