Question from an outsider about life at sea - and port

“I don’t think i would of had to explain it to a Greek Master” … that’s funny!!

Some members of the philippine crew sailed with Greeks in the Persian Gulf area in the Nineties and they told us tales about bunker tricks we never even realized were possible…
Anyhow, in the paperwork prior to bunkering the receiving vessel has to sign a clause that in case of disputes the delivery barge figures are the correct ones. Which plays the ball to yourself or your trusted engineers to
attend a correct opening sounding on the barge and trust their sounding tables. 1990 I sailed on a vessel built in Germanys Bremer Vulcan shipyard. They frequently went on hire/ off hire and they had two big books which looked very similar. On the cover was written in bold letters +SOUNDING TABLES+ and on the other book
-SOUNDING TABLES-. While making your on hire or off hire soundings you only had to choose the right
volume. I am not sure but I think the books were originally ships property and the figures accepted by all parties concerned . Rings a bell ?

Ding-dong, ding-dong!!

Cool. How might the C/E premises might have looked like ?

In 1972-73 I was Master on an old former Greek owned and operated dirty tanker of 18,000 DWT in the PG to India trade with IMF/HFO.

There was what was known as a “Greek Bend” between the bunker and cargo manifolds permanently installed and well painted. She went to the breakers in Taiwan with it still in place later in 1973:
