He’d give it back if I asked. I made a couple of foul weather rescue tows that would test the tensile stregnth of the pucker string and stood back to back in a brawl at the Boudain Hut with this guy. I’d sail with him anywhere.

It was built for Caspary and Wendell and was purchased by Deaborn Marine in '69. I told my friend that was the first vessel I sailed after getting my Z card. He gave me the wheel. What, a brawl at the Boudain Hut? No, really. THAT would never happen. Okay, only once a night, maybe. I have been through a couple there, and I have only been there a couple of times.
Which shipyard in Freeport? Swiftships? I used to do a LOT of surveys there in the 90s.

It was Quintana Marine. I don’t think it’s there any more. I have done business with Swiftships in the mid '80s.

Sounds like my kind of bucket-off-blood joint.
My last six months in the navy was spent as an instructor at NAS Mainside, Corpus. Outside the gate leading to Padre Island Drive were lots of such joints. For reasons I can’t explain I enjoyed them, that is until one fine night the fellow sitting next to me was shot dead. Seems it was over a wife or girl friend thingy gone very bad.
last trip we spent some time in Corpus, lay bearthed near the Lexington, was wonerful, we fled the ship at night and a 10 min walk later were pounding em back, sailed past the barrier islands and looked like a nice place to vacaition in. after we shifted berths it was a $20 taxi both ways to get to the closest bar/back to the docks, for shopping ya better find a ride lol, we almost got to the point of finding a cooler, a 12pack and sittin on the beach gettin loaded,bar tabs were killin us!

Yea, I well recall docking way out of town in the many ports my ships took me. The taxi fares alone could kill your wallet plus the waiting time could be an hour or longer. Still we went - hey - we were merchant seamen.

Oh, now MY “Thanks” button is missing. Can’t agree more. I have to say that is why I liked sailing to Tampa (Hooker’s Point terminals) and Port Everglades. Back in the bad old days of no port security, drinking establishments like Stoney’s in Tampa and the Southport Raw Bar in Lauderdale were reasonable walks from the dock, and staggerable on the way back; especially if you know where the holes in the chain link fences were. Oh, wait. The closest joint to the dock in Lauderdale back then was the Pink Pussycat (yeah, that kind of place). Gotta love it. Sure beat places like Texas City or Corpus.

Oh yea - Fully agree - Been to both places. I use to walk from the ship at Hooker’s Point Terminal to Ybor City. It’s was a bit far in the heat and humidity but what the heck, the cold beer when I arrived at the bucket-of-blood I liked was worth the walk ,can’t recall it’s name, a few blocks from the Columbia Restaurant and on a corner. A popular joint.
The Pink Pussycat - yea, a family friendly joint for sure.
I’m not family friendly so I avoided the joint.
I like the Southport Raw Bar.
Looks like we hanged out at similar beer gardens - shoot - might have even been in a few at the same time.

I can’t recognize enough of the first location to make a determination. When I was with ABS, I did a lot of surveys on a similar tanker, the KEYSTONER. Beautiful ship and in great condition, even for a tanker built in 53. Sad to see that one go. Great superintendent, too. Don. Man, what was his last name. Rayburn? Hmm. It’s been a few years.

A little change of pace here. This is a jack up drilling rig temporarily stacked for repairs in the Ciudad del Carmen roads, Campeche, Mexico. Back in '04.
