Your points are well made. I have been amazed that USN officers can be in the engineering department in one ship and on deck in the next and they have in the main been able to do the job.

Interesting point. One of my classmates (KP) graduated as a deck officer, but ended up going active duty in the (US) Navy. 81 was a real tough to get seagoing jobs with the downturn. He spent his entire Navy career as an engineering officer.

I NEVER fault the men and women that choose to serve. They are the best of the best. But our military leadership is to blame for not really taking an interest in basic self-evaluation or improvement.

THAT is the conundrum. The men and women that choose to serve eventually rise to leadership positions and do not take an interest in basic self evaluation or improvement because by the time they reach leadership positions they have learned to get along to get ahead.
