Maritime Academy - 42 and Color Blind
Ask for the lantern test. Easy to pass. I cannot do 90% of the book type test and passes the lantern test 100%.
Here in the Navy I always request the latern test. It is an easy test. I cannot read even one of the ishihara plares.
I was able to pass ishihara test perfectly though somewhat slow. So I decided to take up farnsworth test and found out that I have deuteranomalia towards green. I can distinguish red from green and all primary color. It’s just that I have problems when it comes to arranging them according their shades. I’m planning to take up Marine Engineering but I’m afraid that I won’t excel as one. Should I pursue my dream or choose another path?
If you’re able to pass the Ishihara test, then let it be. There’s no need to overtest and overthink the situation. I’m slow on the Ishihara test as well, but I can still pass it without error. Besides, when you’re out at sea, nobody’s going to try to trick you - the lights are the color they are. You either recognize the color or you don’t. There isn’t any gray area, pun intended.

If you want some consolation, there are few people who are authentically “color blind.” But a significant chunk of the male population does suffer from some sort of color sensing deficiency. We’re talking around 30% of the male population. So that would mean 30% of the male population is automatically disqualified from employment as a merchant seaman? I think not. Again, don’t overtest and overthink the situation. If you pass the Ishihara test (assuming you didn’t simply memorize the plates), you passed it.
