I know some mariners don’t like Shelikof Strait because of the current. If I remember correctly the Straits have some strong tidal currents.
of course Shelikoff is horrible in a strong NE’ly wind and Stevenson and Kennedy Entrances are known at the “Toilet Bowl” for a reason, but for strong S’ly and E’ly storms like were forecast for the period, you want to be able to have the lee of that huge island. Take your time going northbound and pick your window to shoot out and across. If you get into any trouble, there are a ton of good bays to pull into to get things sorted out. All easy to get into and deep.
Now here’s a question, since KULLUK was a manned tow, what did it have aboard to anchor itself in an emergency if it’s mooring anchors and chain were left in the Beaufort? You’d wonder if that is written into the voyage plan anywhere? Does it have a secondary anchor on it somewhere?
