Jones Act Loop Hole

We don’t have that 9th freedom here. I lost a flying job because of it, it turned out the real owners of our company were Japanese with a USA front person.

Can we get a tax on think tanks or require they be registered as foreign agents? They’re certainly not promoting policies beneficial to Americans.

That will happen as soon as they start taxing churches, synagogues and mosques.

I’m kinda ok with that too if it were put on the table…

HMT isn’t applied to exports because it was deemed unconstitutional: UNITED STATES, Petitioner, v. UNITED STATES SHOE CORPORATION. | Supreme Court | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute

Note from the ruling: " We held in United States v. International Business Machines Corp., 517 U.S. 843, 116 S.Ct. 1793, 135 L.Ed.2d 124 (1996) (IBM), that the Export Clause categorically bars Congress from imposing any tax on exports."

We appear to have an American President and admirals that recognize a national security need for US flag ships, and US shipbuilding capacity.

He also claims to want American energy dominance, and the JA and other measures such as cargo reservation and an export ban are directly in opposition to that.

I’m just pointing out that repealing the JA would promote your goal of encouraging Americans to rely more on American energy. Maybe you don’t like that fact, but a fact it still remains.

An important part of Energy Dominance is also having firm control of energy transport.

And what is your “control of energy transport” now?

  • By pipelines; yes.
  • Domestic transport by sea;; somewhat (though JA).
  • Import and Export of Crude Oil, Petroleum products, LNG, other types of gases in liquid form; NONE.

Of course this last is not under JA restriction, thus there are no legal reason why US owners could not buy foreign built tankers on the open market, put them under US-flag and compete with foreign flag tankers for the transports to/from USA.
Why don’t they???

BTW; US companies control the 4th largest fleet of vessels by value in the world.
Most of those ships fly foreign flags (not ALL FOCs):

Only if repealing the JA causes refiners to build new refineries. Until then the oil companies will sell their oil wherever they can get the best price.

Shorter routes=lower transport costs=higher profits. When even the CEO of a JA tanker firm says that there would be more intra-US energy flows without the JA, believe him.

Then we need to stop electing ultra rich people into the white house because there’s no way Trump and the Republicans will ever go for a tax increase on the wealthy.

The same could be said of Democrats.

The sooner people drop the labels of Democrat or Republican the sooner progress will be made. Most folks are like me independent and no party wins without the independents.

I said that just to wind some people up. It’s not the labels I don’t think. It’s the vitriol and lies coming from both sides. The division is by design and more than enough blame to go around. At the end of the day, there is no middle ground. Nothing changes until something horrific unites us. And then maybe…

without crude trade the US couldnt refine its crude as the refinerys where built to use foreign crude.
Its also an arbitrage trade where different refinerys want different feed stock to make different products and hence there is a crude price difference.
