Don, you know, I went in to the Army when I was 17. 11B1p. Did my time and moved on. I’ve owned guns in the past, but not now. Went to a good liberal college in California, and they taught me lots of good stuff. Guns are icky. Now, I think that gun control is a good idea. I think we should take them away from private citizens. The 2nd Amendment should be rescinded, and a new one that’s more clear: that only a well regulated militia should have guns.
Let’s let the government take care of us.

Guns kill people, so, lets get rid of them. Simple, no? Why is getting rid of the 2nd Amendment such a crazy idea? It’s poorly written. We’ve changed the Constitution before. Remember Prohibition? The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th. The 14th Amendment repealed the 3/5ths rule. The Founding Fathers put in place a system where we could change the laws of the land, including Amendments in the the Constitution. I say we get the 28th Amendment, to repeal the 2nd, so we can have good gun control and a nice, safe country.

I have to admit, I left myself open to free interpretation and mocking on that one. I spent so much time in Adobe Illustrator working on those charts that I was too tired to write an editorial. Maybe I can update the charts and write the editorial. I’ll have to think about that one. And yes, I can take a virtual beating when I leave myself open to it.
The charts were intended to show how difficult it will be for the U.S. Department of State to hammer out a maritime treaty for armed merchant vessels when 28% of the IMO are members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Don: You seem to be a seaman. Since you have a plethora of experience at sea, why don’t you bring this conversation around to how it relates to US ( the other readers of this forum.)
How is your idea to have armed merchant crews to be carried out?
What basis do you have from past history to base this on?
Under what conditions should arms be ‘held’ by mariners?
Should there be an arsenal locker on each and every merchant vessel?
Who should have the say as to when they are doled out?
From reading your posts it appears you feel you should be carrying all the time, at your discretion, and with free reign to use. If this is your thought, intent, and idea then indeed you need serous psychiatric help.
Since you have some merchant marine experience, aren’t you under the control of, and following the orders of the Master? Do you know something that the Master doesn’t know? All omniscient one. Tell us!
It appears to me that you are a very literate, scholarly, well read guy. BUT, it also appears you “Don’t play well in the sandbox with others” so to speak. I wonder how your past crewmembers feel about your tenure aboard!
I’m thinking you spend an inordinate amount of time being a ‘sea lawyer’ instead of doing your seaman’s job!
Maybe, just maybe if you spent HALF the time advancing your career, and had gotten even a 100 ton license and had some time actually operating a vessel you would ‘draw some water.’ But after 20 years and you still being a deckhand says something about your skillset.
When you actually accomplish something, come back and let us know. Until then, why not take the day off, and take a couple courses, in say STCW, license, RADAR, ARPA, Celestial, basic seamanship, heck even a USCG AUX safe boating course!

I will tell you like I told DECKAPE. All you have to do is read the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, the federal law on arming U.S. merchant vessels, and the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States to understand that Second Amendment rights of U.S. merchant seamen do apply and are enforceable aboard U.S. flag merchant vessels, i.e., keep personal firearms and company-owned firearms in a secured gun locker during a voyage to be issued to the crew at the captain’s discretion as the situation requires, i.e., pirate watch or repel pirates during imminent attacks under maritime law regardless of whether there are mercenaries on board or not.
You know the cliche: Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. You proved the falacy of your own argument for repeal of the Second Amendment when you cited Prohibition of Alcohol. Prohibition of alcohol didn’t work just like repealing the Second Amendment will never work. You are talking about human behavior and emotions. People are driven by their own mentality to kill, either by murder, voluntary/involuntary manslaughter, or by lawful self-defense. If you ban guns you will have to ban every manufactured implement on the free market. Blades of all sorts will have to be banned. Hardware stores will have to close down for all the blunt force implements. This is the slippery slope argument you present that leads to absurdity.

The crews were NOT armed, they had arms in lockers, but they were NOT armed n a day to day basis.
The crews were under command of the ‘riding crews’ of the ‘armed guard.’
You seem to think we are at war. Is this ‘war’ declared? Maybe you need to start a grassroots petition to declare war on whomever it is you want to ‘take out.’

From reading your posts it appears you feel you should be carrying all the time, at your discretion, and with free reign to use. If this is your thought, intent, and idea then indeed you need serous psychiatric help.
Since you have some merchant marine experience, aren’t you under the control of, and following the orders of the Master? Do you know something that the Master doesn’t know? All omniscient one. Tell us!
It appears to me that you are a very literate, scholarly, well read guy. BUT, it also appears you “Don’t play well in the sandbox with others” so to speak. I wonder how your past crewmembers feel about your tenure aboard!
I’m thinking you spend an inordinate amount of time being a ‘sea lawyer’ instead of doing your seaman’s job!
Maybe, just maybe if you spent HALF the time advancing your career, and had gotten even a 100 ton license and had some time actually operating a vessel you would ‘draw some water.’ But after 20 years and you still being a deckhand says something about your skillset.
When you actually accomplish something, come back and let us know. Until then, why not take the day off, and take a couple courses, in say STCW, license, RADAR, ARPA, Celestial, basic seamanship, heck even a USCG AUX safe boating course!

FINALLY you present decent and logical questions. I will answer them all if the rest of you BACK OFF and STFU! I have all the information on my laptop and Google will provide the information I don’t have. I WARN YOU ALL! The answers I give will prove me right under the laws of the United States, the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, the Common Defence clause of the Preamble to the Constitution, and U.S. Supreme Court cases. I have done my research on damn near everything related to the Second Amendment. You can consider me a well educated person on constitutional rights. I am also well educated in human rights treaties and maritime treaties and international conventions. So, any more mocking, any more insults will only prove you to be ignorant jackasses.

Exactly! If we get rid of guns, then everything will be safe, because you don 't run the risk of getting shot by anyone, and only the government will have guns. We’ll be safe.
Don, the 2nd Amendment should be repealed, because it’s so poorly written. Let’s just do away with it. We can re-write it so we can end all of these arguments about it. That way we can better control guns…
