Which union other than Teamsters has made a really solid stance on this? The correspondence I’ve gotten on board from AMO and SIU has basically said we support them, don’t cross the line, if you have an issue call your VP/Patrolman.
Well it’s got Canadians so it’s international
The ILA will be back at work soon. They all have thousand dollar a month truck payments coming due.
Thanks for that info.
Absolutely, he is going about this in a manner that will not win many friends of other working class people.
I agree with you on that front, especially in regions where unionization (cough cough the US South) is viewed as dangerous/socialist/commie/leftist/immigrant propaganda. Just pick the word of the day. Strong unions with good leadership are anathema to the modern-day high corporate profit margins.
ILA probably wants nothing more than contributions to their plans above all else, same as MMP, AMO, MEBA and the rest. If it comes with a pay raise for the rank and file they champion it, but in the end you dont get to be a Union Pres on a high 6-figure salary with bonuses without making sure the Unions nest (and your own) is well padded.
Coming out of the NY/NJ area this kind of bravado is going to come off as just another goomba johnny trope of arm twisting to satisfy the Boss.
Just like the World Series.
Well, apparently they just turned down a 50% pay increase and a 300% increase in pension contributions.
“We will not accept the loss of work and livelihood for our members due to automation. Our position is clear: the preservation of jobs and historical work functions is non-negotiable,”
Said another way, “We refuse
to acknowledge the concept of Technology and First-World Advancement, and will never invest in training for our members to strengthen their employability in the future of shipping.”
What is this, the Coal Passers and Fire Tenders Union…?
I won’t lie, your comment made me think about the story of the day in 1956 when the containership Ideal X departed Newark for Texas — how when it left the docks one of the union bosses was quoted as saying he wanted to “sink the goddamn thing.”
The coal passers and firemen in the US merchant fleet are AMO represented. Automation took the water tender jobs this year. SS Badger Lake Michigan Carferry on which I once cooked.
Automation? Please tell me you’re not talking about one of these…
What’s the difference in moves per hour in Hamburg with their auto trucks vs drivers in CHS? What’s the difference in labor cost? Before we get all caught up in jerking ourselves off about automation.
I drove past the Staten Island terminal on Monday morning. Interesting how everyone is picketing among their $100k trucks and BMWs with the whole alphabet on the back, holding signs up in the air with their Rolex clad wrists. This is supposed to garner sympathy from the “working man?”
According to The book The Box by Marc Levinson the more powerful unions were able to negotiate severance pay, early retirement and so forth for dock workers made redundant by containerization. Apparently this is the path taken by the west coast unions. Increases the productivity of the ports and potentially the pay of the longshoreman. The pay of west coast ports is evidently higher than is the ILA’s.
My post about settlement of dockworker’s dispute in Germany was flagged as off topic. (Heaven forbid that somebody should learn something from how things are done abroad)
Since Hamburg is mentioned I risk linking another article about the way the port of Hamburg function:
As to move per hour, Hamburg vs, CHS:
Source: Port of Hamburg Magazine - 03.18
As for CHS I didn’t find any mention of “Operating hrs.” or " crane move per hr.":

PS> Hope this does offend anybody.
And while I’m at it; more news about the ILA strike as seen from abroad:
Heaven forbid that someone should take the hint and drop it or start a new discussion.
Sounds like he has some regrets about that video now that he’s getting death threats:
