I stand corrected

I have not followed the saga of the Davie yard very closely, but remember that a Norwegian company /(Cecon ASA) ordered three highly sophisticated vessels at Davie in 2007-2009. This went sour because of financial problems at Davie.
Their main shareholder ended up taking over the yard for a while, but did not manage to solve the problem.
The first vessel was eventually delivered in 2014, (years delayed):

Gecon went through a rough spot themselves in 2015.

The contract for the other two vessels were cancelled in 2016
The near complete 2nd vessel, Cecon Excellence, (No.718) was transported to Bulgaria for completion in 2017. That never happened and she was transported to Norway in 2020, but again not completed. (AFAIK)
The 3rd hull, Cecon Sovereign (No. 719) was scrapped.

The last I can find about this vessel is a post in NSF from 2023, when it was still in exitance: “I noticed when passing by today that the crane has been rebuilt, all the way up to the cabin, but no boom yet. There must be increasing interest in this one too now that the market outlook is improving?”

Love this picture from Deep Freeze 80, Glacier, Polar Sea, and Northwind. Not sure there are many pictures of all 3 classes of Polar Class breakers together in the ice - I was there for it

The latter has a wrong rendering for the Polar Max.

I have seen many different rendering of the Polar Max design over the last few years.

Well, here’s the correct rendering from the shipyard that has just started building it:

Similarly, you can find the up-do-date rendering of the polar icebreaker being built by Seaspan on their website:

Even though it may visually resemble the old design, the arrangement below the main deck and about there quarters of the hull form have been completely redesigned. Thus, it is no longer the Vard 9 206 design.

I guess naming new nuclear-powered icebreakers “Leningrad” and “Stalingrad” is a sign of the times. :roll_eyes:

In the meanwhile Canada, Finland and the United States have signed a joint statement of intent to advance the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact. Perhaps next we’ll hear about concrete plans to build those eleven Arctic Security Cutters?

Chinese nuclear-powered icebreaker design receives Approval in Principle; no plans about construction revealed.

Looks more like a technology demonstrator and a stepping stone for nuclear-powered naval vessels than something for which there is actually any use.
