Or like this?
Hurtigruten using anchor to get alongside in Bodø during gale:
maybe but in a bigger port so they come in forward and turn inside the port hanging on the chain so the pick is about at the entrance.
Plenty of chain out so they have a good head of steam when passing it on the way out.
nice job but no not like that as they are alway inside
Yes they are “inside” the harbour. That’s where the wharf is.
It’s blowing a hauling gale from abeam, yet they get alongside by using an anchor to help control the drift.
PS> It also help to get off the wharf when they leave again after a short stop.
North bound: Bodø , 13:05 - 15:20 hrs.
Control is more precise and accurate using the wheelhouse controls compared to the indirect control of the anchor chain.
When coming in hot and using the anchor there is both higher loads and less time to react which gives the bow crew less margin for error.
Yes dropping anchor when underway would put a lot of shock load on the mooring system that it is not designed to handle.
The flukes might break off the anchor, cracks might appear in the chain or windlass.
I’ve seen on one vessel where there was a very big anchor they were dropping it in the brake and not clutched in, every time they took the break off and on again it was putting shock loads on the windlass and cracks started to appear in the welds where the windlass was welded to the deck.
yes might thoughts too, was done at much higher speeds than in OM’s posts in very old ferrys

That is a perfect overhand knot, big chain too, made it all the way up the hawse pipe.
That just proves that nothing at sea is actually impossible.
