Welders?

Is there an actual rate for welders in the MM and if so what is required to get into that field.

Well, I’m going to sit back and watch this thread for sure…

No.

At sea the engineers weld. Anything requiring extensive welding or requiring certified welders gets done by a welding contractor in port.

Thanks Capt. Phoenix I had a chief I served with tell me to go in as a AB with my welding cert. and sea time I could make 350 a day any truth to that.

There is not a rating for a welder, but many self propelled hopper dredges carry a welder on each hitch to keep up with repairs and maintenance on the dredge gear. The company I used to work for would hire people with welding experience and at least a entry level MMC and BST.
