Commercial Traffic seems unaware of Round the World Vendée Globe Single Handed Hydrofoil Sailing race heading for Les Sables D’Oloronnes. About 20 very tired sailors racing at speed through increasingly long nights, surely some leeway should be given! HIGHLY DANGEROUS. And he complains that he had to argue with the bulker captain for him to change course because he is a sailboat and has right of way. 🤣 ---

These are the so called ‘false friends’. The same or nearly the same word in a foreign or between two foreign languages, but with another meaning. While writing, they are very difficult or impossible to detect. ---

I like Herrmann from the yacht club down the road from my house that I am not a member of. I don’t have a yacht. But Dalian seems to go for it. And in 24 hours there is a winner. Fantastic. ---

Why wouldn’t the bulk carrier change course? The sailboat is stand-on in this situation and would be even if she was a powerboat. I am not going to defend sailing along with no one awake, but this was not the case here, the skipper was awake. If someone wants to make a rule that bulk carriers have rights over sailboats at all times then go ahead and do so, but as of now the sailboat was stand-on. - this actually causes a lot of stress offshore, we never know if a ship sees us, doesn’t see us, will ignore us because we’ll scratch the paint at worst, will give way, will say FU on the radio, or ??? It probably works the other way too, the skipper of the ship knows SOME sailboats will veer away, some won’t, and the AIS/ARPA plot is liable to be quite screwy if the sailboat is going off wind in heavy seas and changing course 20 or 30 degrees with the waves. My standing orders are veer WELL away if no radio contact and passing arrangements are made, assume the ship is on autopilot and everyone is sound asleep unless shown otherwise. ---

Meanwhile this half delirious, sleep deprived guy is demanding a bulker, that he is not onboard, make 30 degree course change because his AIS told him they’d be close. ---

I’ve have been getting squeezed out of a traffic lane or otherwise had no place to go and called another ship to request they alter course. From time to time whoever is on the bridge evidently only has permission to follow the track waypoint to waypoint. They have to be given a specific course to steer to get compliance. In this case they were specially told told alter 30 degrees to stbd. Doesn’t sound like the captain was on the bridge at the time. ---
